Yates County Sheriff's Office

A generally cooperative and professional branch of law enforcement, The Yates County Sheriffs' Department averages towards professionalism more often than toward the contrary. Citizens are able to go in, avail themselves of police protection, and file complaints in a ready manner. There are systems in place to review procedural and other complaints, and a system to oversee those outside of the purview of the Yates County Sheriffs' Department. All of these things are generally accepted good practices toward checks and balances. Local citizens can enjoy the benefits of local law enforcement combined with the necessary degree of professionalism, with more assurance that their needs will be met. However, when one cannot reach any degree of satisfaction with the local village police department, then complications arise. At that point the checks and balances come crashing down, and a citizen has no recourse, as the Sheriffs' department will then honor jurisdictional agreements over and above the legal rights of the citizens' who actually pay them to do their job. This glitch is unacceptable, and requires a good deal of work for the average citizen to re-mediate for the successful reception of assistance.
