If I could give less than one I would!!! This is supposed to be smothered chicken. WHAT IN THE HELL. They hard fried the chicken then poured brown gravy over it. The greens are from a can with no additional seasoning and the rice was bag rice with can gravy WORST THING EVER! Do not waste your time!
I made the mistake of going close to close on a Sunday night so they were pretty much out of the main course items I wanted they did offer to make a new batch but that seemed excessive but they still had peach cobbler so I picked that up to have for dessert and it was THE BOMB. I've eaten their food back before they were at this location so I already know the main courses are 5 stars. They put their heart and soul in to everything they make!
This was my first time at Winnie’s. When I walked in the lady spoke which was good. I ordered just sides and no meat. I will start with the yams, they were good but they had just a little extra something to much, maybe it’s the vanilla but just be careful of how much you put in. The greens could of had a little more seasoning but they were cooked well. The Mac and cheese was good but anything that has juice should be in a different container because the collard green juice spilled into the Mac and cheese. I want this business to thrive no matter who she rent from good luck. Over all I still gave her 4 stars. I will be back one day.
I ordered the fried chicken, fried okra and cornbread. Food was decent - I specifically asked for thighs and was glad I did because even they were on the dry side. Could use more seasoning as well. But I don't regret trying and will again in the future.
My first time here and I was super excited to find a black soul food place here, that's why I'm so disappointed having to write this review. The food literally was seasoned with a "sprinkle" of salt, pepper and paprika. No real flavor.. The chicken still had pink inside. The collard greens were nothing but salt. Mac and cheese is like kraft mac and cheese in the box. Even the sweet tea taste like just syrup and water. The catfish was just okay but I wouldn't go back. I wouldn't recommend.
Very Disappointed ! The restaurant was clean which is a positive. I had Collard Greens and Fried cabbage. The greens were bitter with no turkey meat or flavor. The cabbage was over cooked with no turkey meat or flavor. I am from the south and I did not get that comfort food taste. No flavor. My containers was half full. The containers were small and it cost $10.00.
This was a hard one for me because I love Ms. Winnie, but when I started doing this I promised to be honest. So I'll start with the positive. I gave 2 stars because they had made to order fried okra, and it was good and they had my favorite flavor kool-aid. I had the oxtail dinner with candied yams, dressing with gravy and cornbread. The oxtail had a good flavor but the gravy of it was watery, no thickness at all. The candied yams weren't bad...but I feel like I tasted a bit of clove and it didn't go well with the other flavors. The dressing was actually from a box and tasted like an off-brand Stove Top... gravy was definitely from a jar and those 2 were the most disappointing. When I go out for soul food, I want to feel like I just left my Momma, Auntie, or grumma house and this wasn't it...
We were stopping in Syracuse on our way to the Adirondacks and stopped at this gem. The sweetest woman runs this in honor of her mother. The whole family working together to make delicious fried chicken and okra. Great experience. Would definitely go again.
It's not often that I leave reviews on Google, but I had to share some love. I have eaten at Winnie's twice now and I can tell that I will regularly visit when I can. The food is delicious, the staff is incredible, and it has made history as the first black owned business on Marshall street. Today I had the BBQ Pulled Pork, Fried Cabbage, and Mac & Cheese. Best lunch I have had in a long time. Thank you to Winnie's for the incredible love put into this and please check this place out if you haven't already done so!
The BQ chicken was very good. I ordered a size large chicken plate. There were four pieces of chicken leg, thigh, wing, breast The mac and cheese was good. The greens were ok. The corn bread was very good and moist. The service was very good, employee's were friendly. The prices are some what high but the portions sizes are decent.
