The music department of Washtenaw International High School

Story

The Washtenaw International High School Music Department was created in 2011 as part of the development of a new county-wide magnet International Baccalaureate program in Washtenaw County.

The program contain roughly 2/3 of the school student popular and offers courses in Instrumental Music and Vocal Music.

Band: Symphonic Band, Concert Winds, Wind Ensemble
Choir: Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Vox Humana
Orchestra: String Orchestra

Extra Curricular: Jazz Lab, Jazz Ambassadors, Octavate, WIHI Chamber Philharmonic

Students develop skills in music performance, music theory, and music composition.

There are 3-4 concerts per year with an increasing number of opportunities to perform. Concerts are held at the Ellen Ewing Center of the Performing Arts @ Saline High School.

Beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, the music department will be offering IB Music (a diploma program course) as part of the IB Diploma. This course is a 2 year sequence designed to develop skills in solo/ensemble performance, music theory, music composition, music technology, and music history.

WIHI is easily the best school I've been able to go to. The majority of students take their academics seriously, the staff is incredibly supportive and helpful to students, the skills we end up developing due to being in the IB Programme help in every day life. On top of that, the school is run by one of the most calm, collected, kind-hearted people I've met; Mrs. Nhu Do. She is both incredibly supportive to every single student in the school and is a great problem solver in general. Even more, the WIHI community takes mental health seriously - something no school I have gone to in the past has done. There are always counselors available and the teachers themselves are very open to accommodating students' needs in order for them to succeed. The teachers are all very approachable due to their open and likable personalities. Overall, if you can handle the immense workload of the IB Programme, I would highly recommend you spend your high school years at WIHI.

As a School I find that this school is particularly fine. They give you free lunch which is actually good lunch. The school is rated #2 in Mi for ACT and our composite scores are 31. The teachers are kind and helpful, the program is challenging but very beneficial. You can take retakes on every test and we use Standards based grading which makes it easier to score a high score. Not to mention a 93% is an A and there are no A+ so you'll get a 4 as long as you have a 93% in all classes when checked by colleges. Unfortunately, there are some flaws. One of these flaws is that there is limited choice in our classes and we don't get many options to choose what classes we get. Also, admission in this school is fast to get accepted but very slow to get officially in the grade book. It has been over a month and I still have not relieved my official schedule. This school also has a middle school attached to it which is very annoying. Finally, the school's community has very politically correct views, but it does not apply to all. But I will say the Community was very welcoming nevertheless. So in conclusion, if you're racist or stereotypical then this school may not be for you.
