The room was small but very well appointed and clean. Bathroom and especially the shower was very small. The entire property is amazing with the layout of the buildings and the design - beautiful!! Checkin was very easy and the lady very friendly and helpful. I had Room 14 which had a shared deck off the back which was a nice addition. There's a great Bar-B-Que place right next door as well that was very good!!
The office was closed when we checked in around 5pm on a Friday so we didn’t get to visit the store, but it looked fun through the windows and we probably would have bought something. Check-in was done by calling the number on the door and speaking with the owner? to confirm the reservation. The door key was under the mat at the room. Surprisingly for a Friday night in early July, the motel didn’t seem to be more than 25% occupied. The queen room #4 or 5 was small and cozy. The bed was comfortable but the window side of it had an extremely loud creaking with every move on the bed. The shower stall was new though the water angle and curtain design caused water to easily get on the tiled floor. The air conditioning is a fairly new unit and strong, though the angle of it in our room pointed straight in the bathroom - understandable though, with limited placement options for the historic room. The room itself seemed like it hadn’t been stayed in for a while - there were lots of cobwebs in the edges of the room and several spiders dwelling in them. We took a few minutes and cleaned them ourselves and things looked and felt better. There was an ant issue though. Nothing that kept us up at night because we have the same small sugar ants that we deal with at home in the summer. But that’s an issue that I imagine many people would not just blow off. I suggest getting some better ant bait and scheduling regular cob web cleanings. True that the ice machine wasn’t working but ice was provided via a cooler so who cares? All in all, considering the supposed historic significance of the motel the oldest continuously operating motel on Route 66 I would recommend staying here. It was a nice change from the chain motels.
My wife and I stayed here recently during our Route 66 trip and had an absolutely wonderful experience. The rooms are nicely remodeled, and it was a beautiful setting. We walked next door to the Missouri Hick BBQ for dinner and really enjoyed that as well. We highly recommend it.
Cute Route 66 motel, nicely renovated with lots of original touches. Clean but small rooms. Walking distance to downtown Cuba. Nice shared outdoor areas to congregate with other guests.Rooms: 5/5
If you are traveling with a dog, read this before making a reservation. Called to make a reservation, and was told there were two pet rooms. We felt fortunate there was one available. We were NOT told the room would not be in the cute historic stone cottages. Instead we were given a key yo a cinderblock outpost in the lower 40, which had cement floors, a cheap metal door from Home Depot and a wall A/C Heater Unit, which sounded like a jet engine when it was running. We were also told our dog, was not allowed on the bed or in the bathroom. I did not even want to go in the bathroom. It was small and cramped with a cheap plastic shower stall with a curtain. The room was connected with the laundry facility which also had a jet engine heater unit which cycled on and off every thirty minutes. We called the number which was left in the room, which said to call with any problems we may have. The woman came out, was rude and yelled at us. If you don't want pets you should have a no pet policy. But don't charge $125 to stay in a jail cell.
Wonderfully clean. She and staff care. Way my grandmother cleans comes to mind. No riff raff. You can tell they take pride in this historic gem.Rooms: 5/5
Super love the setting, accommodations, and history. Room was very nice, quaint, and restored. Scheduling the room was NOT a good experience.Rooms: 5/5
The Wagon Wheel is a quaint and historic motel on Route 66. Because we were traveling with our dog, we stayed in one of the two dog-friendly rooms. Our room was very small by today's standards, but included a queen bed, a mini fridge and microwave, and a small table and chairs. The bathroom and sink area had been remodeled and everything was very clean. Our only complaint was that the air conditioning unit was very loud -- wish we could've opened the windows for fresh air instead. The office and shop weren't open during our visit, but a phone number was posted so we could arrange for access to our room. The outdoor seating areas were nice for chatting with other guests. Downtown Cuba is within walking distance and we were able to view several of the murals which provided a nice history of the area. It was wonderful to experience this piece of Route 66 history.
This place is what made traveling across America special, and is in really good shape for being open since 1938. Of course it’s in a great location for those enjoying Route 66, room was very clean and nicely appointed, cool ambiance and neon signs, plus you have a restaurant next door. Enjoyed the place, had a great nights sleep, and easy check-in/out. Highly recommend a stay here and Connie will do what she can to make your stay great.
Room was 85 degrees and we had ants. Now the ants were fixed quickly with a bottle of raid. The AC we were told was blowing cold air so there was nothing to do. When we talked to the owner again in the morning she said we should of called, her grandson who brought the raid should have advised us to do that. Well he is the one that said it was blowing cold air so nothing could be done. And we paid A LOT for what this room was!! To stay in the historic Rt 66 motel was the best part. And the neon lights were nice to look at too. Our friends that had a different room did not have these issues and enjoyed their stay.
