The Retreat has indoor and outdoor bars and dining areas. We chose outdoor dining because covid was still surging in upstate New York. Dinners come with a choice of salad or soup. The salad, with thousand Island dressing, was excellent after removing the tasteless, lye-cured black olive slices. The seafood chowder was also excellent getting our meals off to a good start. I ordered sauerbraten because I had read in a review that the restaurant was known for this classic German dish. The dinner with sides was so large that it had to be served on two separate dinner plates. The sauerbraten and egg noodles with gravy on one, and the red cabbage, applesauce, 2 potato pancakes, and a side of sour cream on the second. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the sauerbraten I had had on a number of occasions at Danzers German Restaurant on Ainsley Drive. The meat was not cooked long and slow to tenderize it and the sweet/sour sauce was too sweet with too little contrasting red wine vinegar. On the other hand, the potato pancakes and red cabbage were excellent, and the noodles were briefly fried to make them crispy on the edges. A very nice touch. My wife had much better luck with the turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, squash and gravy. also served on two plates, with enough leftovers for a full second meal at home.
Great place for lunch and business meeting. Quick service, good food, very attentive staff. The menu has really good options with affordable prices. You'd think this place was expensive at first glance. I'll definitely visit again.
To be completely honest I'll eat here cause of the outside atmosphere. The service was garbage. We wanted an outside table the said there was none n seated us near the door to the outside were everyone goes in and out mind u I have 3 kids n one of them is in highchair. Nobody got us the high chair we got it ourselves and they were stuck together finally we are all seated and they said a table opened up outside but if it rains you'll get wet. So we took the outside table anyway. The waiter looks at us n says ok grab everything n ill meet u out there. So with our hands full of kids we had to get our drinks, silverware and napkins n the high chair all our selfs n carry it to the table. Yeah not fun. We got our food it looked very pretty but in reality it was nothing special pretty bland to us. Honestly eating there was a disaster. Shocked on how poor the service was and like I said food looked great for pics but wasn't worth the money we payed for it.
I mean where do I start We got seated and waited for like 20 min to get our nice waitress the order she was nice I give her that …. But then wait again for another 15 to 20 min for the food … Appetizer was oily and let’s get to my dinner I mean this is the worst chicken parm I have had in my whole entire life … no constancy. I mean I wouldn’t suggest anyone going there …. The one star for the waitress because she was working hard but please do yourself a favor and run as fas r as you can
Great place food was amazing, service was excellent, atmosphere was cozy, warm, and fun Highly recommend
Everything was absolutely delicious. Service was great as well.
Never a bad experience here. The food is always delicious and the staff is fun, even when it's super busy. I highly recommend the Seafood Neptune and the salads and sandwiches are delicious. My husband and son dream about the Prime Rib!
The steak we amazing . Cooked perfectly! The fried haddock dinner was huge and so crispy. We were so full but couldn't resist taking dessert home and we weren't disappointed. The carrot cake was so moist just like a traditional farmer grandma recipe and the creme Brule was spot on. Even though it was very busy the service was attentive and super nice.
Awesome place to stop and have a few drinks and food especially on the patio. Service can be hit or miss especially when it is super busy. Be understanding and be nice to your server. They are trying their best with the current circumstances.
We love the atmosphere in the Retreat. Cozy kind of European vibe I get in there. Food is in general really tasty. Clam Cowder is my favorite. Steak sandwich is very good. Fried haddock is light and crispy. My daughters Philly had so many onions on it the other day it was kind of ridiculous, but we scraped them off and it wasn't a big deal. The service is lacking though. Sat in the front area and had the same waitress the last 3 times and I have never waited for so long and not gotten things we needed like this anywhere. Same all 3 times. Starting to be a deciding factor on going there or not.
