Phenomenal experience! Sushi selection was excellent!! Chef Julian and Chef Tony gave detailed explanations of all the pairings. Sushi: 10/10 Dining Experience: 10/10 Recommendation: Beverage Pairings was so good! Welcome cocktail Sake/Ginger And Whiskey was Mental!! Book it while spots are available!! Definitely recommend going again!! Dietary restrictions: By Scratch definitely accounts for any allergies or dietary restrictions. They make sure the experience is the best possible
Food is really good, cant take that away and waiters are really friendly. Unfortunately, the overall experience was a big let down. They offer you the typical omakase all nigiris and then they try to upsale all their extras. First they offer a caviar and black truffle pairing which is simply a little portion of caviar and truffle grated over some nigiris and at the end services they try to sale extra courses that are the chef favorite fishes. The whole experience was 3 hours and we had to push the staff to be able to leave "early" as others were still having their extra courses. They tell you to come 30 min early but then leave you 50 min at the bar. Not sure if it's on purpose to sell more drinks or something happened, but they shouldn't request you to come early if they are not ready themselves.
The food was exceptionally delicious. We opted for the caviar and truffle option for 140$ more but the quantity was so little. Sadly, the service was subpar. Our reservation was at 21h30, but they texted us to come at 21h. We were seated at 21h55 on a Wednesday. The last piece of sushi came at 23h50. They offered more sushi pieces at extra cost to the other clients at that time and told us we had to wait for other clients to be served before have the dessert and leave. In the end, they gave us the dessert and we paid. When we left, there was no one at the coat check. Great food, but will not go again. In my opinion, an omakase experience should be an all inclusive price instead of trying to make clients pay more for extras.
We had a wonderful evening of fine dining. It's an experience that is like no other in Montreal! Attentive, personalized service, and delicious sushi! I loved the seating arrangement where we could watch the chefs work their magic. The bartender also created specialty cocktails that were unique and delicious. Highly recommend Food: 5/5
I had dinner here and it is by far the best omakase experience I’ve ever had. The food and service were top notch! Also, chef Alexa kept the conversation flowing and we had such a great time laughing and learning about the dishes. 10/10Food: 5/5
Wow. I can’t wait to come back. Incredible unique experience, sushi you simply do not find in Montreal, and fantastic service. Blown away. Parking: There is a large parking lot across the street.
It's a 16 piece nigiri omakase, one dessert, total 17 service, at the end of the 16 service, the chef will offer one extra nigiri 50$, it's a foie gras one, it's very delicious. before dinner you will be asked if you want caviar and truffles on your nigiri, it's topped on some nigiri not all of them 85$ premium. Three wine pairings are offered, drinks: 3 sake, 2 cocktails and one beer 150$, the second is 5 sake for 170$, third option is 5 japanese whiskey pairing for 170$. 20 % gratuity is added to your bill. I know, it's costly, but worth every dollar. This should be the place you bring someone to celebrate something big, special occasion or something, the meal in and of itself is amazing and a memorable experience. ON TO THE FOOD 1 HAMACHI yellowtail tuna: torched, topped with corn "sauce" some fried bits, wasabi - it is soft sweet, the fried bits add contrast, yummy. Good start... 2 TORO tuna belly: has pineapple maple sugar- rich, buttery, the pineapple adds sweetness and fragrance unlike anything I've ever had before. This is instantly my fave! 3 KAMPACHI: Lemon and olive oil - subtle combination but adds a nice dimension. this is the first time I've had olive oil in sushi, it's quite original. 4 SCALLOPS: ponzu, hot sauce - best scallop ever, soft and melts in your mouth. New fave again... the sake pairing for this is also a bit piquante parallels well 5 SHIMA AJI striped jack:soy sauce and salt - nice umami 6 MADAI sea bream: scallion - lost my notes lol 7 TIGER SHRIMP: olive oil, matcha salt - onw of my fave, shrimp is sweet soft and tender, condiments make it very unique, melts in your mouth, like a lover's kiss... 8 KING SALMON: torched, olive oil - soft buttery satisfaction 9 ALBACORE: aged 6-7 days, topped with fried onions - again the fried onions offer great contrast of texture and taste 10 SABA blue mackerel:torched, beets sauce, lemon, home rice crispy - contrasting textures and torched smokiness. I personally don't like mackerel because of the smell but this one went down easy, very tasty. 11 AKAMI tuna: salt and wasabi - classic buttery tuna satisfaction, the color was bright red, so vibrant 12 ESCOLIER NOIR oil fish: torched, soy sauce, slamon roe - buttery and smokey, so lovely 13 WAGYU: torched, soy sauce, wasabi - smokey tender, melt in your mouth, umami bomb, new fave again! 14 BONE MARROW: torched, Bali sea salt, wasabi - rich, soft, somky, with a hint of sweetness, the hints of sea salt hit intermittently as each grain melt in your mouth separately, and cuts through the fat nicely, again new fave... 15 UNAGI eel: bone marrow is torched over it so it is coated with fat, and topped with poblano - smoky, rich, the poblano adds some nice fresh and mild spiciness. 16 UNI sea urchin: matcha salt, nori, you hold the nori with rice in your hand, it's kind of an open hand roll - sweet soft fresh tasty. 17 FOIE GRAS: torched topped with salt - smoky silky soft, sweet, rich, hints of salt to cut through the fat, perfection, new fave again! 18 MATCHA ICE CREAM BITE WITH DRINK: matcha ice cream cake is coated in a matcha chocolate and topped with roasted sesame seeds. it is served with a drink containing matcha, yuzu, plum wine. Take a bite of the cake then a sip of the drink, it will leave you with a special aftertaste. Something everyone has eaten in childhood, something sweet and warm and makes you feel happy. So the end is very nostalgic, I won't say what the taste is, if you want to know, then go it's an amazing experience!!! PS: I've tried the drinks pairing and sake pairings so far, both are very good, the two cocktails from the drinks pairing are on the sweet side, so fair warning. The pairing usually runs parallel or contrasts the nigiri, it is highly enjoyable, has depth and is thoughtful. Listen to the chef and sommelier, they unload a lot of info... I will be back to try it with the whiskey pairing.
Had the privilege to indulge this one of a kind experience in the food capital of the world.Food: 5/5
Yes it’s expensive, but shut up cause you’ll have great memories forever. And don’t you dare say the food is not good. It’s AMAZING!! There’s technique, creativity, personality, etc. I don’t care if you got a better deal some place else, or had a better experience, this is a one kind thing you need to live, especially in Montreal, we don’t get this. Now, about the price. I’m from the industry. I’ve worked in a very well known fine dining restaurant that I cannot name, BUT after going to eat there as a former employee of 5 years my bill was still more than this experience. And to be honest, I got relatively the same service and food quantity/quality. Some bad reviews make non sense, this is a 4.7 rated place, please correct ASAP
Had a lovely experience at Sushi by Scratch on a Saturday in August 2023. We were asked to arrive 30 minutes ahead of our reservation. Because we get to watch the preparation of each course and everyone is served at the same time, they probably request early arrival to avoid having to start late due to latecomers. We were offered a complimentary cocktail, there was an oshibori to clean our hands, and we were served 2 amuse-bouches as we waited. We were shown to our seats at the sushi bar on time and presented with the drink options curated pairings or items from their drink menu. The chalkboard behind the bar showed the different fish/proteins we would be enjoying. You get to watch the sous-chef expertly slice each piece of protein and the chef add the finishing touches and seasoning. Each bite is seasoned to perfection and placed on your plate for you to pick up and enjoy. It was creative and absolutely delicious. A great modern take on sushi. I did not encounter the issues described in the negative reviews; It must be because they have taken note of the comments and addressed the issues. There was no pressure to take the upgraded experience that adds caviar and truffles to our existing dishes. Yes, we were asked to arrive 30 minutes early, but there was no pressure to order any drinks from Stillwell. We were shown to our seats at the reservation time. There was also no pressure to add the additional course at the end at an additional cost, and those who did not opt for the course were offered the opportunity to have their dessert right away or wait to experience it with the rest of the diners. Service was excellent and friendly. Food was outstanding.
