I concur with most people who say that the experience here was overall unpleasant. From the cramped seating built into the main table (you have to crawl over people to sit) to the condescending treatment from the main clerk (an older lady with dyed hair and large glasses), I always dreaded having to go there. Some of the staff are more supportive and don't seem like they hate their jobs, so that helps a bit. But the one lady I described earlier is usually there seems to treat men different from women. I watched while waiting in line and any woman would be met with a smile, whereas a man would be met with scorn and derision, sometimes even being spoken to like they're idiots. Then there's the whole procedure itself. If the claim is under a certain amount of money, the judicial officer settles on 40-60% of the claim value, regardless of how well supported the plaintiff's claim is. I had collected lots of documentation over the months following the incident, and diligently submitted it to the court, signed affidavits, etc. I provided an expert witness, took time off to see to the timely completion of each step - and for what? To find out it didn't matter because the amount awarded would automatically be 50%? It not only discourages culpable defendants from being accountable in everyday life, but plaintiffs from accurately representing the amount of damages.

The quality of the staff varies considerably. On one occasion, the person was quite helpful. On another occasion, it was all I could do not lose my temper with the condescending jerk at the front desk. The wait times to even file documents are generally long. And, not to discourage people, but if the people you are suing are real jerks the process can be painstakingly slow, there's very little disincentive to dragging out the process. I also note for anyone engaging in the process that the website is TERRIBLE. My command of the English language is fine, and I cut and paste the instructions for the next stage of my battle to be sure I followed it to the letter. I showed up, paid to park, waited, only to discover that I needed two more documents. I went home, looked at the printout and NOWHERE did it say I needed those documents. Small Claims is a useful process, overall, but the way it's managed now it's just brutal.

Slow wheels of justice are here to serve you (if you have the patience). Best to avoid small claims court if possible.

I'm just going to copy what someone already said below, because they nailed it. "The staff are unhelpful, ill-informed, and extremely rude. I have never experienced so much abruptness and rudeness before in my life. General questions can not even be asked without being verbally attacked. The Toronto Small Claims Court deserves less than one star. It is a shame that tax dollars are going towards paying for this. It is disgusting."
