Schwartz's Deli

Story

Schwartz's, also known as the Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen, is a delicatessen restaurant and take-out, located at 3895 Saint-Laurent Boulevard in Montreal, Quebec. It was established in 1928 by Reuben Schwartz, a Jewish immigrant from Romania. Schwartz's is the most famous remaining Montreal-style smoked meat restaurant. The restaurant also sells smoked meat by mail order. It is kosher style rather than kosher. The staff of Schwartz's credits the unique flavour of their smoked meat to their mandatory 10-day meat curing time, the high turnover of their meat, and their brick smoke-house covered with over 80 years worth of buildup.OfferingsSmoked meatSchwartz's signature dish is a smoked meat sandwich served on rye bread with yellow mustard. The meat is served by the fat content; lean, medium, medium-fat or fat. Medium and medium-fat are the most popular. According to journalist Bill Brownstein, the classic Schwartz's meal includes a medium-fat sandwich, fries, half-sour pickle, coleslaw, red pepper, and a black cherry soda.Smoked meat fans debated whether Schwartz's or Bens (another local deli) had the best smoked meat sandwich. Bens thin sliced meat was piled high between rye bread, while Schwartz's offers plates of thickly cut smoked meat. Bens had a longstanding and widely believed advertising slogan that claimed the restaurant had invented smoked meat, but this has been debunked by cultural historians.

Almost a 100 year old establishment, this place serves excellent smoked meat sandwiches. Like our server said, “We cant go wrong with the sandwich”, the meat was well seasoned and extremely tender. The poutine was great as well. Service was quick, but do expect a lineup around busy hours. Truly a montreal gem and a must-have.
As a New Yorker, I’ll always go out of my way for a great pastrami sandwich. There are only a handful of places left where the craft of properly smoking, curing, and brining pastrami still feels authentic—and fortunately, Schwartz’s is one of them.nnIf it’s your first visit, don’t expect a traditional sit-down restaurant experience. There’s no table service and the ambiance is just a step above fast food. You order your sandwich, fries, or other proteins at the counter, grab coleslaw, pickles, and drinks from the refrigerators behind you, and then pay at a register that’s somewhat awkwardly positioned near the door—opposite the dining area. The seating is simple: essentially a counter and a few plastic tables.nnWhat it lacks in hospitality and décor, it more than makes up for in flavor.nnI ordered a classic pastrami sandwich with coleslaw and a pickle. After paying, my sandwich was handed to me in a brown paper bag. The portion was refreshingly human-sized—not one of those absurdly oversized American stacks. The meat was excellent: tender, well-seasoned, with beautifully spiced exterior bits and a thoughtful mix of lean and fatty cuts.nnThe coleslaw was bright and pleasantly vinegary—I nearly finished the entire container. The pickle came wrapped in cellophane a bit off-putting at first, but once unwrapped it delivered exactly what you want: a satisfying crunch and a well-balanced brine.nnThis isn’t a place to linger. I was in and out in under 30 minutes, which feels about right for the setting.nnAll in all, I’m very glad I went. Next time I’m in Montreal, I might skip the no-frills dining room experience and just have it delivered to my hotel—but I won’t skip the pastrami
The poutine and smoked meat sandwich were delicious, the price was pretty good for what we got, and the service was quick; only a few minutes to get everything to us, despite it being relatively busy.nnThe space is a bit cramped, but that's actually part of the character of this place, and I think it would've felt strange if it weren't like that.nnThe history about it was pretty interesting, too. It was one of the points of interest on our tour and was really neat to hear about how long they've been open, as well as the celebrity connection that kept it open during hard times.nn11/10 would recommend.
At first, the old building might look a little unusual from the outside, but once you step in and later walk out, you realize how charming that vintage look and those worn yet lively details truly are. The place has a unique soul and energy that slowly grows on you.nAs a chef who deeply values food quality and digestive health, I was genuinely impressed when fermented pickles and sauerkraut were served as side dishes. This thoughtful choice showed a real understanding of how food can support the body—paying attention not just to flavor, but also to beneficial bacteria and digestion.nThe food itself was outstanding. Each dish felt better than the last—from their signature sandwich to the steak, and even the beef liver, all cooked with care and confidence.nIn short, the people behind this restaurant truly understand the art and science of cooking. They don’t simply serve food; they create balanced meals, thoughtfully pairing sides and main courses in a way that even helps your stomach feel good after the meal.
It is definitely one of those must-visit spots in Montreal, famous for its iconic smoked meat sandwich. As soon as we arrived in the city, we headed straight there—and it did not disappoint.nnThe sandwich was piled high with smoked meat, generously portioned and incredibly tempting the moment it arrived. The meat was juicy, tender, and full of flavor. I especially loved pairing it with the pickled sweet peppers, which added a nice sweet-and-tangy contrast that made the sandwich even better.nnWe also ordered a poutine, and it turned out to be the perfect addition—crispy fries, rich gravy, and cheese curds made the whole meal feel extra satisfying.nnOverall, it was a hearty and unforgettable meal, and a great introduction to Montreal’s food scene. If you’re visiting Montreal, Schwartz’s is absolutely worth the stop.
