Loved this place. There was someone in my camp site that I had reserved. Thank God there was another site I was able to book. Id recommend whoever oversees the site to look for stuff like that. I was able to get money from the individuals to make up what I spent. The sites are beautiful would have been nice to be able to drive in by the site to unpack, gates were locked. Try to get fire wood before you arrive, otherwise you'll have to scavenge some, and there is a nice big brush pile down towards the overflow lot.
Sandhills station on Mud Lake is a beautiful camp ground, guarded by stately oak and beach trees this quiet spot is tucked away just barley out of reach of the lights of Lake Mills. It's is graced with much flora and fauna, a glorious example of central WI with a view of the Milky Way. On a weekday in the middle of summer you may be lucky enough to get the whole campground to yourself as I did. I enjoyed quite encounters with wildlife and an early morning chat with a birder wondering through. And of course the cranes the spot is named for are seen and heard from dawn till dusk.
Nice little area for tent camping, you don't have to walk too far from the parking lot. My only gripe is that when you pick a spot, you can't really tell what you're getting from the website. Some spots have no shade at all, ours only had evening shade, some are more secluded than others, it's a good idea to take a walk around here first before making a reservation, especially with summer weather. There are vault toilets on site that are easy to get to. Site have picnic table and fire pit. There is no wood on site. I do understand that outdoors means mosquitos, but be prepared for an onslaught. Even with bug spray I still got about 2 dozen bites. We came during the week to avoid other campers.
There are few trees, but there is reasonable privacy due to brush. The Glacial Drumlin Trail is over a mile away, and the connecting trail is very bumpy, consisting of grass and sparse gravel. Bringing a cart or bike trailer makes toting camping equipment and goods to and from the campsite much easier.
A hidden gem of a campground. All tent sites in an oak savanna. The group site is the best part of this state campground. Close enough to Lake mills to swim, glacial bike trails, and mud lake to kayak or canoe.
Beautiful sunset view. Great place to take a shorter but scenic walk.
The campground is primitive. It had vault toilets and potable water. The showers are almost a mile away and of-site in the Lake Mills bike trail building. They're reasonably clean. The mosquitos were bad. The ankle/mosquito photos were taken about 2 seconds after walking into a campsite.
Nice camping for tents only. Dog and family friendly. Most sites are big enough for two 4-6 man tents. Sites are far enough apart to give some privacy. The water may be drinkable but is rusty in color and taste. The parking is a short walk from the sites so bring a wagon. It is grassy so we found a few ticks on us each day.
Great place of you have DEET. Mosquitos are very very bad. Camping is peaceful and you hear all the lake animals at nightfrogs and such. Lake is beautiful to canoe, no motors.boyscouts stood in every day or soon weekends at least to sell forewood.
It was a good site. Wasn't much shade so it was hot. Fishing was good and saw lots of wildlife.
