Sand Hills Lighthouse Inn

Story

Sand Hills is a formerly active lighthouse on the shore of Lake Superior converted into a bed and breakfast. It is located in Ahmeek in Keweenaw County Michigan in the Keweenaw Peninsula, which is the northern part of the Upper Peninsula. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.HistoryFrom 1857 until 1908, Eagle River Light was the only lighthouse between the Keweenaw Waterway and Eagle Harbor Light. With the end of the copper boom in the 1870s the Eagle River, Michigan harbor started to decay. "By the 1890s, it seemed the only ship coming into the harbor was the lighthouse service tender." It was recommended to build a new lighthouse at Sand Hills where most of the lake traffic passing and to decommission Eagle River.A lighthouse at Sand Hills was authorized by Congress in 1893, but no funds were allocated for its construction. Meanwhile, the Eagle River Light was decommissioned and sold in 1908, leaving no navigation light in the area. Sand Hills Light was finally commissioned in 1917, in part as a response to a number of ships that had run aground on the nearby Sawtooth Reef since the dismantling of the light at Eagle River. Sand Hills is about halfway between Eagle Harbor Light and Ontonagon, Michigan.

Stayed there twice with another visit planned for later this month. This place is so special, and the hosts are wonderful, although we understand that Bill passed away last November. We purchased a gorgeous framed photographic print of this wonderful place and have it prominently displayed at our home. The long drive to get here is well worth it!

On July 7th, my husband and I were married. He looked for a quaint, romantic spot to celebrate the days following our wedding. The only thing he shared about his surprise reservation is that he spoke to a nice woman named Mary. Upon our arrival, I was instantly taken aback by this gorgeous lighthouse, perched upon endless Lake Superior shoreline. As we approached the lighthouse, a beautiful note hung on the door, inviting my husband and I (by name) to make ourselves comfortable. We were instantly greeted by the light house owner and operator, Mary. She greeted us and gifted us with a hand made wedding card. All the anxiety and stress built up from the wedding was instantly alleviated from this point forward. Mary happily escorted us to our rooms and gave us a complete tour of the lighthouse and grounds. She willingly shared stories and answered all our inquiries. Mary's instantaneous kindness and love for her lighthouse and guests was immediately felt and consistent throughout our stay. The lighthouse itself is an engineering marvel. The strides that were taken during its renovation become apparent as we toured each individual room. The adaptations for the placements of the bathrooms and decorative steps through the use of antiques and period furniture make each room one of a kind. The evening desserts and classical entertainment are something that can only be matched at the finest culinary eateries. The Sand Hill Lighthouse is not a typical B&B, it is a warm welcoming into Mary's home. There is no front desk, room keys, or wifi, which gives this northern retreat an intimate and warm feeling. Your days can be filled with exploring the nearby towns and copper mines, or relaxing along the Lake Superior shoreline; searching for world famous agates, and photographing the spectacular views in and around the lighthouse.
