Rodrigo Resende Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy

I have been going here for almost a year. I have been enrolled at other gyms in the Edmonton area but this one is by far the nicest I have been to. Everyone at the gym is friendly and I enjoy the classes and like the fact that there are classes every day of the week.

Friendly welcoming atmosphere. Dropped in to check out the facility and was extremely pleased with the class. Thank You Rodrigo ! Ooos !

I write this review in an effort to prevent this from happening to someone else’s child, or for Rodrigo himself to listen to me finally and improve supervision of his classes. As safety should always be first. I don’t care if the place is big or clean or if the people at the front desk are friendly if it is NOT SAFE. I unfortunately had to see my son brutalized on the mat before I came to my senses and terminated my membership. Which could have been prevented, if Rodrigo cared enough to properly supervise children’s sparing sessions. I watched my 6 year old son tap not once, not twice, but six times, before he was released from a choke. I won’t get into how terrifying it is to witness such a thing. If there was proper supervision, a class instructor would have seen this and intervened. But when I looked around to see who was supervising, I saw no one. I saw Rodrigo ignoring the entire class of roughly 20 students that day, to give an on the spot private lesson to one of his favourite students. So, knowing that he did not see this happen I decided that he needed to be made aware of such an occurrence. Expecting him to hear me out and take action as it was his responsibility to do so. I would have been supervising, as I was one of his senior students, but an injury incurred while training there prevented me from doing so. Injuries, unfortunately, are a common occurrence there. So here I was on the side lines watching like all the other parents. I approached Rodrigo to inform him that there wasn’t anyone supervising the sparing, as any parent should feel free to do at any time. As soon as I approached him I was met with an argument as he was offended that I would approach him during class. I was shocked, proper etiquette would have been to hear me out and tighten up on supervising the sparing sessions. Instead he brings me into a back room to chew me out, while continuing to neglect sparing sessions even longer. It was at this moment, that I decided it was best terminate membership . There will be a very strong chance that your child could be sparing unsupervised, and get injured physically, never mind the emotional and psychological damage. I have continued Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but not with him, and never again. I have seen better clubs before and after him. Thank you for taking the time to read, I know this entry was a bit lengthy. This is one of many occurrences that happened to me that had me question if he was worthy of my loyalty. All he has taught me was what not to do. Never sacrifice quality for quantity, like Rodrigo. I have said my piece and now I will have peace, knowing that I have not continued to cover this in a shroud is silence. Beware of those who are out to get ahead at the sacrifice of others. Rodrigo is one of them.

Rodrigo Resende Academy is not only a club but a second home to those who are striving to be the better versions of themselves. I am a witness to the growth of this gym not only because of its awesome teaching team, superb instructional level and amazing family orient community. I am speaking as a mom who have watched her son grow from a shy boy to a confident martial artist. Vincent has been one of the first student assistants of Sensei Rodrigo. Sensei has seen his potential and has sponsored him to train high level Judo in Bastos, Brazil. Vin had been training since March and today was promoted into his Purple Belt (Blue Belt). Sensei and his team of instructors have provided a great support for the growth of this young man. I am proud of him and I am proud to be a member and student of Rodrigo Resende Academy! Oss!

I have been going to this place for just over a year now and I am very impressed. The facility is always clean and always well taken care of. The staff and instructors are amazing. From the teaching to the lessons to the sparring and competition opertunities, this place is top notch. I would highly recommend it!
