Rio Theatre

About

The Rio Theatre is Vancouver's favourite independently owned and licensed venue offering an eclectic mix of movies, live music, comedy, burlesque and more.

Story

Buttering your popcorn since 1938, the Rio Theatre is the cultural anchor of East Vancouver's historic Commercial Drive neighborhood. If it can be done, we'll do it. Movies, concerts, comedy, burlesque and so much more.

See www.riotheatre.ca for our current calendar and showtimes. Steps away from the Commercial Broadway Skytrain and numerous buses, there is also ample street parking adjacent to this beautiful, art-deco artspace.

Please note that as we are a licensed venue, minors are not permitted at some events.

"Voted #1 in Vancouver, The Rio is a multimedia venue for premier independent cinema and much more. Showcasing first-run feature films, indie films, classic films, local & international films, hosting numerous International Film Festivals as well as a prime venue for live entertainment ranging from top class concerts, burlesque, comedy, improv, spoken word, variety shows and much more.Watch these variety of shows in extremely comfortable seats with removable arm rests, state of the art surround sound, and top of the range digital projection, with full bar service and reasonably priced concession goodies Voted Best concession in Vancouver including East Van's favourite Grilled Cheese!"

I always love coming here. I’ve come a few times for special events or showings, but I’ve also swung by for regular showings. Always a great time and the concession as some extra treats. The Rio is a genuine Vancouver, especially East Vancouver, staple. Highly recommended!
God bless all the people who work here. I went to “Hollywood” theatre and those people were not showing the game today! Like what’s wrong with those fools ? It’s the most beautiful game man! World Cup yo! Like it’s only once every 4 years! … anyway thanks for letting me watch the game here when a brotha was broke af
The Rio is an iconic East Van landmark. We absolutely love this theatre, and the energy of the film lovers’ and staff. Don’t sleep on the slushy margaritas they are essential. The Rio is a guaranteed fun night out for everyone.
Just go to the Rio, you'll love it! And you're supporting a very hard working team. What they have accomplished there is nothing short of a miracle. To learn more you can google how Corinne saved the theater! It is an establishment that would be sorely missed by many if something were to happen to it.
From initial outreach to on the day management, the staff at the Rio were beyond flexible and helped make sure our film screening went off without a hiccup. A beautiful venue through and through, our entire team thanks you!
First experience with a cabaret show last night show had men, women, big and skinny, old and young, do strip teases during parody of The Office, good sign society is less puritan here than back in Ireland, but not my cup of tea. Still I'll be wanting to discover other events they have in this theatre such as cult movie showings and other comedy events, and taste their acclaimed Margarita :
Quaint little theatre. Have been here to watch Indian movies in local languages. Good size screen and decent acoustics. Has a small footprint so not much space in the concession stands and for washrooms.
I went for a concert. It was very cool. Smaller venue for concerts. Family-friendly.
The rio is AMAZING. Staff is super cool, architecture is divine. The movies that they play are a perfect mix of old and new. They even serve beer and cocktails!! You gotta come here!
A lovely historic theatre. Be warned the balcony seating feels quite claustrophobic, but the seats are pretty comfy. It was too packed when I went to get popcorn I would have been in line too long and missed the film but I look forward to trying it at my next visit.
