Red Oaks Nature Center

Story

The nature center are in danger of closing. Currently, a dedicated group of volunteers are keeping the doors open and helping to maintain the building and grounds. I urge you to please write your city council and ask them to PLEASE keep our nature center!

Not only is it important for our woodland friends, it's important for us! It's a relaxing walk on a stressful day, it's teaching your children about nature and all it's wonder,it's about coming together as a community, and there are many more reasons why having this wonderful utopia in the middle of bustling city life, is so important.

The nature center is an important educating tool as well as a place to have fun. They have seasonal displays, as well as live native animals, friendly volunteers to answer your questions (sometimes providing free treats for the kiddies :), a warm hearth during the cold, an indoor tree fort for the kids, and much more.

So I urge you to visit the Friendship woods and nature center, and visit often. Don't forget to sign the guest book!

I came here with my kids recently, and we stayed for about an hour. You have to pay to park, which is $5/day or $30 for an annual parking pass for Oakland County parks. Parking is the only charge. There is a small indoor building with fish, snakes, and turtles, and it also has a fireplace, which is nice in the winter. The lady working there was very nice and informative. Outside are two paved trails that circle through the woods. There is a small vernal pond, which means that it dries up during part of the year. We didn't see much wildlife besides a few birds and squirrels. But they say there's a red fox that lives there. Since it's paved, we never attempted to leave the path and explore. We like to go to Tenhave Woods in Royal Oak, which is dirt paths, and spend lots more time exploring. Red Oaks seems more like a place for runners and dog walkers, but we still enjoyed it and will likely return (especially since we purchased the annual pass! )

Awesome birding hotspot in Spring. Paved trails are handicap accessible and children friendly. It's always a good day to visit Friendship Woods.

A wonderful way to pass the afternoon. Beautiful well maintained trails, friendly staff and visitors. I bring my kids In the summer and fall to attend the nature center activities parking is limited and you have a parks pass but you can always park across the street for free and walk over. The nature center building is very cozy and nice they have several small tanks with local animals (turtles, fish & snakes) for show and a clean bathroom.

Good place to ride bikes or walk the trails. The nature center on the inside is pretty neat to learn about some of the different animals and their habitats. Cost 5.00 for parking. Nice place
