Story

24 years ago, Mel Rapp opened a tiny dispensary at the back of his mother’s hat shop. What seemed like a crazy idea at the time has grown into one of the most unique and avant-garde optical shops in the world.
Combining old-fashioned work ethics and modern technology, with an irrepressible sense of fun, Rapp Optical is an eclectic institution in the city of Toronto. Rapp Optical is a continuously evolving and beautiful work-in-progress.

I've been purchasing glasses from Rapp for the past 10+ years. The service and style advice top-notch. I've been known to get the same pair in different colours, that's how timeless their frames can be. Also love supporting a local independent brand.
I have purchased many pairs of glasses at Rapp. Over many years. All were expensive. As a result, you might think that when a product defect issue arises – in this case the lense coating literally peeling off - Rapp would take the matter in hand, deal sternly with its manufacturer, and insist on replacement lenses for its customer at no charge. Rapp’s solution was, rather, to shrug and offer me replacement lenses at the current cost of $700. That is why I will not be buying glasses at Rapp again. Ever.
I have had some issues with Rapp over the years - in particular a former employee tried mansplaining colour theory to my partner and I when we were in looking for glasses. She is a photography professor, and I have worked with NASA and the Canada Space Agency on hyperspectral satellites. We didn't get a chance to get a word in edgewise. BUT, their glasses are beautiful, and my most recent experience with them was above and beyond in terms of customer interaction. Expect them to be a bit prickly, but also expect to get a beautiful pair of glasses that will be right for you.
Can I give it 10 stars?!! I've been getting all of my eyewear from Rapp for several years. Even my 87 year old mother shops there. It is the only place I will shop. I love that they have such unique, stylish and edgy frames and they only carry a few in each style and colour so the chances of seeing someone else wearing them is highly unlikely. When you wear glasses all of the time, it becomes part of your look and image and Rapp glasses make me look unique and different from everyone else. I am constantly stopped by people complimenting me on my glasses and asking me where I got them. I also absolutely LOVE the owners Julia and Mel, and Melissa has a great eye and is always my deciding vote on which frames to get. Can you tell I'm a huge fan?!!
This is the only place we have been buying glasses from for the last 15 years, if not more! Amazing selection of fun, cutting edge eyewear! We get compliments on our glasses & sunglasses all the time!
I am very particular about my eye wear. I visited Rapp with an idea of what exactly I wanted, but the staff is very experienced in the business - I was suggested totally different kind of glasses to try.. I was not even willing to give it a try because it was totally different from what I wanted. I reluctantly tried it on..and...Bingo!! I loved it instantly and bought them. I am using them now and I am extremely happy! I highly recommend this place not just for the good collection but also because the staff has good expertise to recommend and suggest the right designs. Thank you!!
This is a great store with great staff. They have a good eye for helping you find frames that will look good and fit your face well. Several family members have gotten their frames from this store which tells you something about our experience and about the positive feedback we have all gotten on our frames. I also want to highlight that their opticians really inspire confidence in their abilities - they clearly have tons of experience and really care about getting your lenses just right.
Fantastic selection of frames and wonderful service. I tried on dozens and dozens of frames and never felt rushed. The owner, Julia, has a superb sense of what looks good on a face. she even outfitted my teenage daughter - and that is no small accomplishment. I needed three-stage progressives and the lenses they provided are amazing with so little distortion. Amazing. Thank you, Rapp!
I love the selection. They have truly unique frames. You pay a high price for them but I had my last pair over 10 years. So well worth the price especially since I have a super high prescription and need a particular shape and sized frame so that the lense isn't so thick. They just have the best selection and they know what they're doing. The customer service has always been great. Just got my new pair a few weeks ago. I love'em.
Prescription lenses came out horribly, could not see clearly through them and they did not fix it. Note: my prescription hadn’t changed, I was looking to get a new pair for fun and despite telling them twice with 2 opticians that I couldn’t see through them they sent me home each time to “get used to them”. Never going back and don’t recommend to anyone ever. $1200 down the drain. My optometrist and another optical store confirmed they installed the wrong power lenses.
