While I don't consider myself a rookie when it comes to thrift store shopping, with an advanced masters in sporting equipment dilly dally - I was surprised to learn that goalie skates weren't as popular as they were before, or at least this is true within the underground economic markets of trade-ins and used purchases. I tried to make my arguments that other than shinney outdoor hockey, most recreational leagues haven't yet done away with goaltenders in front of the net. I'm not a goaltender nor an economist but when I spotted a Value Village pair of Reebok goalie skates for $6-7 with minimal rust on the blade I saw an opportunity to manually restore the blades and then trade up for a classic pair of Tacs the ones with the wings on the side that I had seen here. I had previously purchased uniforms and belts for the boys - fashioning our slo-pitch team with jerseys and shorts, in a league of our own none were more supportive of classic Blue Jays era defensemen. The glove I bought had an unnoticeable hole in it, but I didn't even need to go far down the aisle of the Canadian tire down the road to stumble my way into a glove repair kit - which I should mention didn't help me in the slightest at the shortstop groundballs.nnWhile I was mesmerized at their wall of used roller-blades and vintage gloves, it was winter and I simply wanted a cool pair of skates for a bit of weekly exercise at the rink instead of packing for the gym.nnI'm giving these guys three stars because even though I was unhappy I didn't get the Tacs I had hoped for - I had decided to keep the goalie skates which did end up amazing me in prevention at the between-the-leggers on 1-on-1 defence. I didn't lose any teeth and even while playing Craig McTavish styles - in hindsight I'll give the employee his credit for refusing the Tacs as those goalie skates afforded me the credibility to yell at the kids shooting pucks above the knees.
Great selection at the store but HORRIBLE customer service. When we walked in the staff was playing some game ignoring the customers. We were not greeted or asked if we needed help. 5 staff members and not ONE spoke to us the entire time we were there. We got the skates we purchased sharpened and the guy doing them didn’t even respond when spoken to and threw them on the counter when done. Very disappointing because it is a great store but won’t be returning due to the incredibly rude staff.
