I have often passed by Papyrus and made a note to try it. The idea of Egyptian food on the Danforth was so intriguing I didn't know what to expect. With a mostly vegan and vegetarian menu I had to really coax my partner to give it a go. Of course we had to order the two meat dishes on the menu, namely the beef hawawshi and the chicken hawawshi. Both were very good and nicely spiced. Wanting to try more we alo ordered the full and tameya platter that came with lentil hummus and salads baladi and bread. The Tameya were so good we ended up ordering a side dish of 3 more. And the owner who helped to serve us and who was so kind and took time to explain everything and reccomend what order to try things etc. Also brought us a small bowl of Koshari to try Egypt's National dish. Wow what amazing flavour! The layers of rice, lentils, pasta, tomato sauce with chickpeas and caramelized onions spiced to perfection made this a stand out dish for certain. We already agreed at the outset to try dessert so we needed to pace ourselves and brought some of the hawawshi home. So we split a Bird Nest Konafa and it was simply remarkable! Light vermicelli pastry filled with pistachios and exceptionally good quality ones at that with a hint of coconut! We had to admit next time we are each getting our own! It was that good. Not too sweet just ever so flavorful. Like everything we had the textures and layers of flavour made this a truly wonderful meal experience. And my carnivore companion had to admit how much he loved the vegan and vegetarian cuisine. We also had 3 glasses of wine. There is no doubt at all that we will be back. And if you are vegan or vegetarian this is a must try restaurant in Toronto for you. Be warned however that it is small seats about 20 or so. So make a reservation! Vegetarian options: Both vegetarian and vegan options
Amazing Egyptian food, great service and affordable dine in. Had a lovely experience at Papyrus and would definitely come back. We ordered the koshari with salata baladi on the side. This was my favourite dish! It's so flavourful and I would come back for this. Also did the ful and tameya mix and match. Very yummy. The spices in the dishes are like a warm hug! Lastly for dessert, we had the signature konafa which was great but wished we had time for the cheese version needs 40 min. The servers were kind and very knowledgeable about all the dishes and gave us great advice on what to try and in what order first time eating Egyptian food for some of us. I also loved the indoor decor: it's tasteful and modern and very pleasant to dine in that feels separated from the takeout counter they have patio, takeout and indoor dining. Vegetarian options: They only have one meat dish so everything else is vegetarian. Dietary restrictions: Menu is very clear on what is vegan and what has dairy.
Food was mediocre and honestly a bit pricey considering almost everything is vegetarian/vegan. But I’m not here to complain about the food. While some other reviewers mentioned that they appreciated the server I’m assuming he is the owner explaining how to eat every single dish, I personally found this overbearing and excessive. Setting this aside, my complaint is that this man had the audacity to lecture us regarding our tip after we paid 10%, which is the minimum next to no tip at all, which has never happened to me in any restaurant I’ve been to in my entire life. What this man needs to understand is that the tip is based on the service, and the service at this restaurant was barely there. Yes, he mentioned that he was short staffed at the beginning of the meal. But that is not the guest’s problem. If you are unable to provide the level of service that you would expect a 15-18% tip for, then you cannot expect your guests to tip you as such. Our water glasses were not refilled even once, which is the bare minimum in service. His behaviour was completely unprofessional and left us feeling very uncomfortable after we had paid. I want to stress that we did tip, even though tipping is optional and we did it out of plain courtesy to this man who cannot take an ounce of criticism in any way, shape, or form. He tried to say that restaurants don’t make any money apart from the tip, which is completely untrue. It’s especially untrue in cases like this restaurant, where the food is already overpriced. I also noticed that other bad reviews have either been deleted or have received a snarky response from the owner. I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes down this review as well.
I was surprised by the tasty and quality of the food... Everything well prepared and served. The manager/owner was around.. we talked a lot... nice spot... I highly recommend Obrigado!
So happy I walked past and saw the konafa! Everything looked absolutely amazing, and tasted even better. It’s so hard to find authentic Egyptian food or high quality in Toronto but Papyrus absolutely delivers. I especially appreciate the effort put ingot sustainability, and the wide range of vegan options! The koshari was to die for, I’ll be dreaming of coming back for more Egyptian comfort food. The foul and falafel sandwich was so amazing that it was eaten too fast to get a picture. I also really loved the card given explaining the history and culture of the food, lovely touch!
My friend and I unexpectedly came across Papyrus while walking off our dinner on the Danforth. What caught my attention was the display of Konafas they had plus seeing a picture of the Koshary entree they offer. We decided to make room for dessert, which was a wise choice. The ice cream we had was the Saffron Rosewater flavour - really dense and rich flavours. We enjoyed it with the konafa, which was not overly sweet and had generous amounts of pistachios stuffed. We endeavor to try Papyrus again for their mains for our next visit! There is patio seating available and the service was friendly and wonderful. Thank you for a wonderful experience to cap off a good evening.
My companion and I really enjoyed all the food and drinks. We ordered the Bissara, and Ful and Tameya Mix and Match to share. Both had fresh, well seasoned ingredients; warm, spongy, freshly made bread which we used to assemble a sandwich in the main dish. I especially enjoyed the Tameya Egyptian falafel made with fava beans which had a crispy texture from the coating of sesame seeds. The hibiscus tea and saffron lemon tea were both sweetened, delicious and refreshing. The latter was new for us; the saffron gives it depth and a little savory taste.
Authentic. Food, price, and service are top class and as Authentic as possible. We ordered Kushari and it was the best we had in Ontario. We tried Egyptian food in many Arab countries and Papyrus exceded our expectations. Highly recommended. Will definitely try their other items on the menu. Staff are professional, Authentic, and very friendly. Also, this is me eating the left over kushari at 3am, in the pic. Just absolutely delightful at any time of the day.
Incredible food and really kind staff. As someone who hasn’t really had Egyptian food it was great to hear a detailed description of everything on the menu. We have the Koshari and the Ful and Tameya Mix and Match. I’ll be back soon!
It was an absolute delight eating at Papyrus last night. We ordered the sharing dinner as we have never eaten Egyptian food before and wanted to try it all. It did not disappoint! Our server David explained what each dish was and how best to eat it. Had the lemon iced tea -not overly sweet which was good. We also had 2 desserts to share. The pistachio filled was good and the “Canadian” was a bit crunchy. Could probably have had about half of the syrup on each one and been really good. Actually we were pretty full and should have just shared 1 dessert. We would definitely go here again. Vegetarian options: I think the whole tasting menu was vegan.
