Palisades State Park

Story

Palisades State Park is a state park of South Dakota, USA, featuring cliffs and rock formations eroded out of pink Sioux Quartzite. The park is located just south of Garretson, 10mi off Interstate 90. At only 157acre, it is South Dakota's second-smallest state park.Natural historyThe Sioux Quartzite rocks are 1.2 billion years old and up to 50ft high. They are exposed on either side of Split Rock Creek, which also flows through Split Rock Creek State Park in Minnesota. Within the quartzite are deposits of catlinite, a softer mineral essential to many Native American groups to make ceremonial pipes. The park lies on the Coteau des Prairies, a plateau on the northern Great Plains.Cultural historyPioneers settled in the area beginning in 1865. In the 1870s Split Rock Creek was harnessed to power a large flour and feed mill, and a town called Palisades formed around it. Silver was discovered shortly downstream in 1886, prompting a short-lived silver rush but the ore was found to be low quality. Three years later Garretson became a railroad junction and most of Palisades relocated to the north. A steel truss bridge built over Split Rock Creek in 1908 is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Beautiful spot, set a few miles from the main highway. Plenty of sites available, each with their own fire pits. We visited in mid Oct, so the fall colors were going strong. There is a small creek running through the campground, with a larger river surrounding the park. Lots of grass and trees providing privacy for each spot. There are a couple vault toilet restrooms, as well as a main shower and restroom building, nothing fancy, but plenty to grab a shower before getting back on the road. While taking a stroll through the park, we saw a nice playground area. We had made a reservation months in advance, with no problem getting into the park.

A great place to take a day and get out in the sun. Among your options here are camping, swimming at a great water hole/river, hiking and rock climbing. This is a place that would be great for group and family get togethers, with plenty of grass space and grilling stations. Entry fee is worth the visit here. Good playground as well for the kids!

Amazing climbing and sight-seeing. No bolting allowed! free soloing &trad gear okay. Beautiful little oasis off of I-90! Very inexpensive place to camp and be one with nature. Very safe!! Parks department frequently patrols even when no one is in the office at the entry. Grab some maps and info in the wooden box at the entry and even pay cash at night to sleep over if the bright lights and tons of running trucks at the rest stop don't set you right for sleeping. Plenty of vault toilets. Historic area very close as well.

Very beautiful and still greats for kids. There are playgrounds and trails to hike. The river there is great for fishing and swimming. Everything about this place was wonderful. The scenic rocks and views, the historical bridge and river, were all so beautiful. The only thing that was a bit hard to work with was that there weren't any individual water hookups but overall, this was definitely my favorite camping experience.

This park is very clean and is very well kept. The showers and Restrooms, which ate in the same building, were clean, but a little run down. We were driving from Montana to Ohio and decided we needed a break. When we came in, there was no one at the front gate, but a note to reserve and pay online, so we did. Later, one of the Park People gave me a bit of a hard time and didn't believe me when I told him we paid online. He asked me why I had No Park Pass, and I told him that for over 3 1/2 hours there was no one at the Office. There was Just a note stating the office was closed and to pay online, and we did. He went and checked, and found I was telling the truth. He told me they were having an Employee Picnic, and that was why there was no one there. I said I understood. We tent camped here, and the stars are BEAUTIFUL at night.
