The Breeze and Castine Variety Store had an old Maine charm to it. The sign calling it a restaurant is a bit misleading as there is limited seating available. We arrived a bit early during the lunch hours, got seated quickly and enjoyed excellent service. My companions both felt their lunch choices, one a lobster roll and the other a cheeseburger, very good. My choice, the Deluxe Haddock was good but for the price a small portion of haddock smothered in lots of lettuce, tomato and bun. There are no public restrooms inside. The closest are down the hill on the town wharf, not too far away but inconvenient. I'll definitely go again but order something different. It's an enjoyable place to dine. The food is good and excellent service.
So glad we stumbled upon this gem. Food is excellent and quaint dining amid the general store atmosphere. Clam chowder delicious, clam plate and fish 'n chips some of the best we ever had. Perfect portion size, too. The perfect lunch on the coast of Maine.Food: 5/5
The place is quirky and is expensive. With that being said, it is also delicious. We've eaten there multiple times and loved pretty much everything. My son loved the fish and chips so much he ordered it twice, which is unusual for him. I'll also say that he had a fish and chips from another popular restaurant in town and he didn't even finish it. The rest of the night he takes about how much better it was from here. The lobster roll was also very yummy. They open at 6 and their breakfast is also great.
We were very happy to find a place to eat in early March in the heart of Castine! The store located in the heart of Castine, a prettiest costal village with the gorgeous elm trees all along the amazing harbor. The store's friendly and its welcoming appeal was heartwarming. Variety has a feel of historically preserved costal village building, sunny, romantic and it is a very hospitable local hub to eat. The menu includes healthy options, with classic Maine seafood fare that was the freshest and cooked to perfection. Kermit was the great host and was very kind to us, willing to make an extra step to accommodate a request and he took his time to recommend places to visit in the area. We would be back in summer to visit the store and say hi to Kermit! Thank you for your hospitality!
My husband and I had the lobster roll and crab melt - honestly some of the best we have ever had. Even though we are local to Maine, we were not overly familiar with Castine. We were provided with lots of information on the area that we would have missed had we not stopped in. It was so tasty and had such friendly staff. I look forward to going back!
I love this place. They even put a mint sprig in the tea. The sandwiches were great and we enjoyed them by the water. I am kicking myself for not getting one of their t-shirts. Next time we are in town. The owner was so nice and accommodating.
I have been a home-owner and summer visitor to Islesboro for 25 years and for gourmet seafood cuisine I've found nothing better than Castine Variety. I want to qualify that you can get a great lobster roll or fried haddock with fries in a lot of places. But the signature dishes, especially the curry dishes, are off the chart good. I had the Curried Mahi Mahi and it was killer diller! Oh, and during the Pandemic, great care was taken to make it a safe dining experience for us. I suggest calling ahead if you plan to dine in and it is BYOB if you want a beer or glass of wine.
This is the delicious curried mahi mahi. file:///var/mobile/Library/SMS/Attachments/f9/09/4E3FAF48-DA67-42D9-89D1-C3FED229DBED/imagejpeg_0.jpg The grilled sea bass is also outstanding. The cuts were tenderloins. Mom had scallop basket the first visit this week and it was great. I am a vegetarian and Snow, the chef/owner, fixed a wonderful vegetable stir fry. We went again tonight and had the deluxe lobster roll and crab salad. Snow and Kermit are excellent hosts and the food is always outstanding!! I am so glad Scott introduced us to them :
Poor service, food ok not gourmet presentation as claimed by strange dour mgr? man, crab roll good meat not UNtoasted dry roll, trifling little Cole slaw extra $, sad. Try Captain's Catch better both service & food.
Mediocre food, wildly overpriced, slow and hurtfully mean service. The "Thai ice tea" tasted like toilet water, and when my daughter timidly asked if it was what she ordered the waitress yelled at her. Tourist trap. AVOID. Addendum: I tasted the "Thai ice tea." Someone at the Breeze made a mistake -- I think they mixed spoiled milk with matcha, because it had an awful flavor that tasted nothing like Thai ice tea which I have had many, many times at authentic Thai restaurants. That's fine, accidents happen. But instead of acknowledging the error, or at least trying the tea to see if it was off, you yelled at a CHILD and now attack me for reporting your problem. This is an opportunity for you to take your business more seriously and find ways to improve. Your customers work hard for their money, and they deserve to be treated with at least a minimum of respect.
