As a resident of Portland, Oregon who planned on being in rural idaho for the month, it was such a relief to find that there was a health food store in Salmon. As we made the long drive to Idaho, I wondered what sort of health food store it would be- small-town health-food stores can be a mixed bag, but are often a charming surprise, and this one was no disappointment. We walked into the nicely arranged, well-stocked little store and practically jumped for joy- there were lots of gluten-free items (my partner and I are both gluten-free) a wonderful bulk-food section, tons of oils and condiments and other packaged products, and even a refrigerated section with dairy and eggs and meat. Whew! we said to ourselves- what a disaster it would have been to have had to shop at the local Saveway all month! Now HERE was a place where we could spend our money, and gladly! Picking out some almond milk and rice chips, we approached the register, excited. I pulled out my foodstamp card, all charged up from the state of oregon, and slid it across the counter, admiring the nice covered wagon on its front. The clerk ran the card, the machine made some strange beeping noises, and then promptly froze. At which point we were told that either the machine didn't take EBT, or the clerk didn't know how to use EBT cards in the machine, or both. Shrugging, she handed me back my card. My heart sank. All these nice hippie foods, and we would have to shop at SAVEWAY? What a bummer! And so saveway was where we went, to stock up on wilted, pesticide-covered foods that had been raised in depleted chemical soils and then shipped three times around the circumference of the earth before arriving in Salmon. But! We didn't give up hope! And so today, a week after our visit, we called Nature's Pantry, and asked them if they had gotten their machine fixed. And they hadn't. There was nothing, said the clerk, that they could do. Sigh! (p.s. if you are reading this nature's pantry- get your machine fixed! we're here for another two weeks and we want your earth balance and rice crackers!!!!)
