I recently purchased a smart trainer for my road bike at MEC on the South side. This is an industry that is completely new to me thus my knowledge is minimal. Not knowing much about road biking and especially trainers I felt uneasy and out of my element walking into MEC. The reception I had received by the gentlemen in the bike department completely exceeded any expectations I had. I wish I had gotten his name but he went out of his way and took his time to explain to me everything I required. I really appreciated that he sold me exactly what would meet my needs and did not try to up sell me something that would not resonate with my experience level . I felt extremely appreciated as a customer and felt listened to. I have worked in retail sales in the past and hope I exuded half as much excitement and knowledge to the people I helped as I received that day. I had a great overall experience and I will be back.
Exceptional customer service from David. Most shoe sections of various stores feature a lazy worker. This was not the case at MEC South. David was extremely helpful, demonstrating a strong work ethic and respectful, professional demeanor. He could have done the bare minimum, but chose to help us get the best service possible. By just being attentive, responsive and swift with his service, he's made a lasting impression that will guarantee my future business with MEC. Great job!

Wonderful staff, very large selection. I went specifically for a headlamp and was pleasantly surprised by friendly staff and a bountiful amount of very decent gear at a good quality. Prices are decent if you know what you are looking for.

The store has gear but be careful to look at the price tags on the products AND on the shelf AND THEN BE SURE THAT THE PRICE YOU PAY IS THE LOWEST PRICE DISPLAYED. I've found the last 2 times I shopped at this store the price on the product/shelf was $10 less than I paid at the till on more than one item. I bought several items so did not realize I was overcharged until I got home. They refunded the difference when I went back but if you are not careful you may find you are paying more than their product or list price. When I told the staff of the inconsistency in pricing they said sometimes the items price goes down but it hasn't yet been changed in the computer. They know this is a problem but have done nothing to correct the problem and are misleading consumers with the shelf and product prices being much lower than the till/computer charges when you check out! BEWARE IT SEEMS TO BE A CHOSEN BUSINESS PRACTICE TO MISLEAD CONSUMERS - BE SURE YOU ARE NOT BEING RIPPED OFF WHEN YOU ARE AT THE TILL AND CHECK YOUR RECEIPT AGAINST TAG/SHELF PRICES!

I was looking around at mec's south Edmonton location this afternoon with nothing particular in mind, and found myself in the climbing section, which I often do. I noticed a couple of things on sale and decided on an Eledrid Bulletproof HMS carabiner. I was going to get a second one for a co-worker as well as some Metolius steel key-lock biners. And here's where things get interesting. The Metolius biners scanned at a different price. The clerk, Nicky I think #1237, argued that they were put away on the wrong hook and wouldn't honor the price. My friend didn't want to pay the extra, as he shouldn't, so we held off on those. Would have bought all six they had, but not now. Then the Bulletproof scanned at a higher price as well. Again Nicky argued. When I asked for a supervisor she disappeared for a bit and came back with some story about how one is clearance from last year, and the new one is more, blah blah. She wouldn't budge. Lost another sale. I worked retail for a long time, almost 20 years. This is not how you retain customers. I was a die-hard Mountain Equipment Co-op customer for about 20 years, but those days are gone along with the Co-op. This new Mountain Equipment Company will have to do better.
