Story
This is a place for us to communicate as a league and to share ideas, scores, game results, challenges, smack-talk, etc. Anything to help the league and help our curlers.
Address: 8730 Heather Street , Vancouver V6P 3S8, BC, CA
Found some members of staff to be extremely unwelcoming and did not sell the sport of curling well at all. We had a group booking and I was greeted with "where are your indoor shoes? You're not getting on my ice with those," as soon I walked in wearing running shoes. We were told to wear clean runners in the booking instructions, no mention of bringing two pairs of shoes. Shirley was our instructor. She screamed and shouted at us like a bunch of children throughout the lesson We are a group in our 30s and 40s so we are far from children. Acting as if we should be comfortable with the sport when many of us were curling for the first time and the lesson generally felt quite rushed. She screamed across the court that I was making her upset and would be asked to leave if I threw the stone "hard" again. It was my first throw and I had no gauge as to how sensitive a throw is. It would been good to cover this in the basics to gauge what effort is needed to throw the length of the ice. At the end, they mentioned there is a novice league and encouraged us to join but I and none of the group would want to spend time with some of the staff we encountered. Which is a pity as the sport itself is good fun but this place seriously needs an upgrade of customer service focused staff. We will try a new location next time.
Great little club. We’ll run, ice is always on point. There’s one bartender I like in particular, I think her name is Julienne? Christmas decorations look great too
This curling club is the best in Vancouver! The staff and members make you feel welcome and is a great place for new or experienced curlers. I would recommend Marpole to anyone.
We were a little concerned about the experience of Marpole, they are not really a public drop in and Curl kind of place. However, we had a small birthday event here with 8 of us, including use of the ice and a trainer for a couple of hours. We had a great time, the instructor was very patient and did his best to get us all involved. In the end it was a fun time for us all.
We came here for a work event and had a great time. We used Trena as our caterer and the food was great. It was a burger bar with beautiful salads, and of course some french fries. I would definitely recommend her services as well as this venue if you're looking for a fun , team-building event.
It's a great facility for curling
Came here for a team bonding activity with 11 of my colleagues. It was the first time for many of us to try curling, so we were afraid to slip on the ice in the beginning. But after Doug started to explain the footing and our stance to launch the rocks, we showed little fear in playing the game as best as we could. Doug was super nice and gave us tips to correct our form as we continued on with our games. We had a fun time overall and would love to do it again!
A group of us who have never curled before decided to go for a bday. It was a lot of fun with great instruction from a very knowledgeable and upbeat instructor. The only thing I could complain about was the very aggressive gentleman who takes care of the ice. I had no idea you weren’t allowed to pick the rocks up, but was made aware of it very quickly once he came over and proceeded to yell and point his finger at me for doing so. I understand it’s his livelyhood and that he takes his job very seriously which is very commendable, but I would suggest in the future making said rule known to newcomers beforehand as opposed to going straight to freaking out on someone thats brand new to the sport and doesn’t know better. On the plus side I know now picking up rocks is not allowed.
Marpole is a great old curling club, steeped in history and filled with great people. I've curled here on Thursday nights for years. That particular league is a social league and is semi competitive, but there are many leagues from recreational to very-competitive; mens, womens, juniors leagues, lessons, bonspiel events. The bar upstairs has a great old-school vibe with Fat Tug on tap and a good selection of beer wine and spirits. The cafeteria downstairs offers standard fare, soups, sandwiches, burgers, fries, etc. They also have a pro-shop that sells gear, but call ahead to see if it well be open.
You will always have a good time when you walk through these doors. The bar is nothing to write home about, but the people you meet and the smile on your face is what it's all about. I've never seen their kitchen open, I wonder what's up with that.
