Lake on the Mountain

Story

Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park is a Provincial park located in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. The park has an area of 104 hectares. Other than a viewing platform, parking area, and an illustrated sign explaining the physical structure of the eponymous lake, there are no facilities in the park. The freshwater lake around which the park is based is located nearly above the Bay of Quinte from which it is separated by a narrow strip of land ending in a cliff. Often thought to have no visible source of water, it is actually fed by at least two small streams from the surrounding higher land, predominantly from the west but another enters near the southeast corner. The southeast supply is more of a seasonal spring runoff and by summer is sometimes completely dry. There is also a significant area of swamp to the southwest which would act as a reservoir for water that would eventually flow into the lake. Drainage of the lake occurs on the east side where a small stream flows down the cliff into Lake Ontario's Bay of Quinte. It is believed to be a collapsed doline (a type of sinkhole). It was believed to be bottomless by early settlers. The depth of the lake is still not fully known, although previous attempts have established the depth over deep.

It's a lake that happens to be on a mountain near another body of water. If you've seen a lake before, prepare to be disappointed. There are literally hundreds of places in Ontario that I would rank as more impressive than this. Not worth 5 minutes of your time, at most.

The County is famous for it''s atmosphere of artisan wineries and fantastic beaches, but there's another "Lake" that does not get enough attention. Lake on the Mountain is located not far from, and above the Glenora Ferry, and it's vistas are stunning. It has a small inn and restaurant and a tiny brewery serving locally crafted ales. The menu has a nice variety, from salads to a charcuterie board, and we had a artisanal sausage, made with pork, white curd and jalapeno peppers that tasted just like MORE!!! Coffee is good and the service was fun and informative. The pub room serves food and drinks, and has been seen heading for the brewery to fill an order. Now that's fresh! Washrooms are up a very short flight of stairs, (two steps) so handicap access is limited, but the courtyard , pub room and dining room are all suitable, and there is handicap accessible washrooms across the road in the park. Casual and historic, good food and stories about the Lake on the Mountain.

Interesting place but very confusing. On one side of the road is a small parking area with restrooms and a few picnic tables overlooking the Bay. Lake on the Mountain is located on the opposite side and is not visible from the road with no signage to indicate its location. I fear many tourists would mistake the Bay for the Lake and leave the area without having seen what they came for, probably wondering what the big deal is.

Ferry ride was fun. The restaurant by the lake is nice. Not much to do in this very small town tho.
