The campus is big and beautiful. I was there for the student acupuncture clinic. I found parking was easy and finding the clinic was easy as well. Everything was bright and clean and the students were professional.nnThere are stairs or a few elevators to get up all the floors.nnOnly lost a star because a bathroom has been out of order for quite a while and I had to walk a fist distance down a weird side hall that seemed way too narrow to be on a campus.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University is most highly rated for Work-life balance, and Langara College is most highly rated for Work-life balance. Richmond campus is just 10 minute's walk from Skytrain station.
Most of the instructors at KPU are supportive and genuinely passionate about teaching. Overall, the quality of education here is great, and I’ve had a positive experience.
More Richmond / Vancouver students use this as a 1-year transfer school, though if you live in Richmond / Van, way more irl 2nd year courses are in the Surrey campus, so the bus for Richmond to Surrey is 40m while Vancouver is >1h, so you may not stay on campus too much if u bus back, especially to Van. There aren’t many clubs, + social scene is quieter. At most, Surrey campus gathers more students, so it’s probably the most social, though bigger schools likely have much more prominent social scenes. It’s pretty quiet on other KPU campuses.nnAlso, u have to wait later or last to apply for courses if you’re a 2nd/3rd year, though this happens to gap semester students too. Should try applying for 3+ classes per semester since it’s only 20-30 people per class, aka the usual smaller college class size, especially when registration date is pushed back for 2nd/3rd year students. It’s easy to talk to professors due to the small class size though. Some teachers don’t like uploading PowerPoint slides on Moodle / the class website, though some are ok with it, if u prefer having them.nnSome classes without textbooks may be an issue because there may be lecture videos in online classes replacing textbooks, so u may have to sit thru the 1h lectures for note taking too then, especially if there is no textbook; irl classes note taking can be random too, especially if your teacher has limited reading material for u, though hopefully the class then relies on ur thinking via essays, though many classes have concepts u have to know, so the lack of textbook or lack of record of extensive information may be an issue for students new to the subject, if ur class somehow ends up like this. I assume it’s more theoretical essay based classes though, at least, aka not the test-heavy classes. Some classes have free textbooks, though some have u buying multiple books, which can go past $50, unless you somehow find a free textbook elsewhere. Also, you get textbook info on week 1 + if u struggle w/ classes already, u can drop classes w/ tuition reduction ~3 weeks into the semester; + textbook refunds go up to 3 weeks into the semester too. U can drop the class later though u just pay full tuition then.nnFood, you can go to Lansdowne nearby if you’re in Richmond, though the parking lot walk is ~3->6 minutes after u cross the road, which can be an issue if u just want food during a 15~20 minute class break; other than that, u just have Tim Hortons & vending machines at KPU, though drinks at vending machines can be $3~> $4.50 nowadays; same w/ chips, cookies etc.nnKPU may implement master degree studies, + more co-op eventually, though I am still studying 2nd year, so I have not checked those options fully; May want to transfer though. Sometimes teachers rely on PowerPoints in lectures + improvise additional commentary on slide points, or that course readings help w/ the material much more.nnIf you’re uncomfortable with buying an expensive mind tap course for default digital homework program, and doing homework on mind tap for hours, especially if you’re 50/50 on knowing the material already, if ur class has mind tap in the course syllabus, u may consider dropping quicker into the semester thus. There have been 1h flash cards in mind tap + homework that may take 2->5h if u aren’t the quickest w/ problem sets, plus u can automatically get an answer wrong if u get it incorrect 5x in some classes’ online homework programs. Then u may also have to read textbooks on the mind tap website by scrolling downwards to each page &/or pressing next arrow buttons on Google / the web site per page for these types of programs for 1h~>3h, depending on ur studying ability or reading time for textbook chapters, + usually there are 30~70 pages per chapter in most textbook-heavy classes, I assume. Issue with having textbooks on such programs is that often u can’t download the website textbooks as PDFs, so if u have wifi issues, u have to read on google; + pdfs are easier to scroll through versus a website textbook.
I am currently taking an Employment and Community Service course, here, that I am enjoying immensely, looking forward being able to use this course to secure some employment, while also serving the community, which has been my lifelong white-hot passion.
