Let me start by saying that I love sushi. I like rolls and sashimi and nigiri... All of it really. I drove past this place and decided to give it a try since my usual place was busy and I didn't want to deal with people. I ordered the dragon roll $15, which was literally the only thing on the menu that even sounded good. It was basically a California roll, that was warm, with some tuna over the top with squiggles of spicy mayo and eel sauce. The fish was poor quality and it tasted like some of the more poor quality grocery store sushi I have bought in a pinch. The service was decent, although poorly timed, and slightly rushed. Also, be aware that there is no music playing in the restaurant, but have no fear! You can hear the gym class going on one wall over with perfect clarity . This was a disaster. I won't be back.
I used to love this place as there was no where to get a roll in this town at the time. Now that Little Bangkok is open I no longer go there. The food here is over priced and the quality is lacking. There are some good dishes like the pork katsu but thats about it. The sushi is way over priced. I was there recently to give them one last chance but they failed. The sushi was "on sale" to be competitively priced with LB, but the quality is still less. The servers are two twin sisters and very nice but they move quite slow. KW used to be good when there was no competition but it is a sad sad place these days...
Due to some poor VERY OLD reviews, we decided to try Ko Nechi Wa's to make our own opinion of the place. Atmosphere: I took my friend here who is half Okinawan. For starters, we both liked the appearance of the restaurant. As you walk in there is a "UCC" Japanese coffee light as you walk in. There is also a collage of pictures of customers and the owners in the walk way. The counter has random displays of Japanese foodscurry, Pocky sticks, etc.. The restaurant as a whole is a mixture of Marine and Japanese décor- which for us, tells a story...which we like. The one downfall would be a couple of fluorescent lights that are on/visible. Perhaps painting or decorating the fluorescent panels would make a difference to those it may bother. Service: We were greeted upon entry by a nice older man who informed us that it was open seating. He was friendly and somewhat knowledgeable of the menu items. The one question he could not answer, he got for us from, what I assume was the kitchen staff/co-owner. Food: We both had hot tea, which we both liked. I ordered the Japanese Bento Box Lunch Specialshrimp, rice, korokke- fried potato balls-yum!, vegetable tempura, and seaweed salad and a Godzilla roll. All of which I liked with the exception of the seaweed salad, which had a odd after taste. Wasabi and ginger were not brought with our sushi, however upon delivery of our sushi, the waiter asked us if we would like some. I assume that many of their customers don't eat these side items, which is wasteful. So, I completely understand not providing them out right with the sushi. My friend ordered the vegetable roll and inari sushi. She thought the vegetable roll was well rolled and the ingredients were fresh. The inari sushi was tasty. Our total bill was $44.00 for the food mentioned above. Overall: It was a quiet atmosphere with friendly staff. The food came out in a timely manner. Items ordered were okay and I didn't feel that they were anything to write home about. It pains me to say this but all in all, we found the food mediocre for the high prices and won't be going back again.
The eggrolls are amazing. But the price you pay isn't worth the food. We got 2 Bento boxes $15 each, with tempura shrimp 1! and veggies and a 911 sushi roll covered in a mix of Sriracha and sweet chili sauce. It also came with fried rice that they 10000% make ahead and microwave. The fried rice had a weird sweet taste and the chicken was dry. I had to drench it in soy sauce and it still had a weird sweet flavor and was dry. The tempura came with a sweet chili dipping sauce, which was weird. I'm used to a soy sauce based homemade tempura dipping sauce. The tempura veggies were on point! I don't like that I got one skinny shrimp. It wasn't even tempura cooked, it was beaded and fried like normal bread crusted shrimp. Disappointing. This place loves it's sweet chili sauce. The problem was that there were 2 bottles of sauce on the table. I think both were sweet chili sauce but they tasted like they had gone bad. So much so that we couldn't tell if they were spicy or had vinegar mixed in the sweet chili or what. It was gross. The steamed buns are $2 each and were also made ahead and microwaved. The inside was cold, but tasted pretty good, and the outside was super hot and dry. There are also these really cool little private rooms in the front of the restaurant. They are full of tables and chairs and they look dirty from what I could see. These would be cool for parties if they were functional! I'm disappointed. The eggrolls were so good but that's not worth it.
Definitely NOT the best sushi in ND, I've had sushi at multiple places in Fargo, Bismarck, and Grand Forks, as well as in Arizona. Gotta say the sign saying 40% off sushi should have been a warning... Wasn't nasty but just wasn't worth it.
My friend and I have been eating here since they were in the Grand Cities mall. The food is always fresh, delicious, and the service is lovely. It's also a nice, quiet atmosphere to relax in. I love this place~
Amazing Cream Cheese Won Tons. The sushi has good flavor and the ingredients tasted fresh. I recommend getting the Mermaid roll or the Red Dragon roll.
It is a family owned restaurant. The food is reasonably priced and now that they have placed their sushi "on sale" it has become very competitive. I would def. recommend trying it out.
This place is okay. The food was definitely adequate, but nothing spectacular. It just didn't seem all that fresh. The floor plan leaves something to be desired.
Been going here for years. Nice little place for a rice bowl. This was actually the first Japanese restaurant in ND.
