The Orthodox Church of St. Great Catherine is originally a Gothic church, founded by Charles IV. in 1355 as part of the Augustinian Monastery. Its present appearance dates back to the period after the reconstruction in 1741, when only the slender tower in the facade has been preserved from the originally Gothic temple. In 1420 the monastery was burnt down by the Hussites, but the church continued to function, only with a break between 1737–1741, when it was rebuilt in High Baroque form. In 1784 the whole monastery was abolished by Joseph II. and transformed into a military educational institute, which was replaced by the institute for the insane in 1822. The church was consecrated again in 1841 and worship was held here until 1950, when it was handed over to the municipal museum. Since January 2010 its liturgical function has been restored.

Translated by Google A very interesting church building that was founded as part of the Augustinian monastery by Charles IV in 1355. Allegedly as a thank you to the saint for saving his life in the battle of San Felicia. In 1420, the monastery was burned down by the Hussites. Between 1737 and 1741, the church was magnificently rebuilt from the original Gothic style to the Baroque. Only an octagonal minaret-like tower remained from the old church. Currently, the church serves the Orthodox Church.
Translated by Google From the Podskali district of Prague, bypassing the botanical garden of Charles University, the street will lead you to the old square, where the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria lurks in the shade of centuries-old trees. The temple begins its history from the middle of the 14th century - in 1355, when the first stone was laid at its foundation by order of the Czech king Charlemagne. Catherine of Alexandria was the most revered ruler of the saint. The construction of the Gothic church was completed in 1367. It was at the same time that a nunnery of the monastic order of the Augustinians was founded under him. In 1568, the Augustinian sisters moved to a new place, and the monastery became a male one. In 1718-1730, the church of St. Catherine underwent a major reconstruction. A new building of the monastery was built in the Bohemian Baroque style according to the design of the court architect Christopher Dientzenhofer. In the years 1737-1741, Kilian Dientzenhofer rebuilt the church itself, leaving only part of the wall from the previous Gothic building and building the original tower into the facade of the building. In 1781, the Austrian emperor Joseph II carried out a religious reform, as a result of which the monastery of St. Catherine was abolished and disbanded. An asylum for the insane was opened in the building of the monastery, and divine services and church ceremonies were held from 1837 exclusively for the staff of the asylum and its inhabitants. In 1950, the church was re-consecrated, but it was not used for religious services. The premises of the temple became a repository for sculptures not included by Prague museums in the current exhibition fund. In the 1960s, the church was opened to the public, but this period did not last long, about 10 years. In 2013, the church hosted a concert of Byzantine music as part of the 22nd Festival of the Revival of Spiritual Values "St. Wenceslas Celebrations". Today, the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria is located in the area of the General Faculty Hospital, and the Orthodox Church manages it. Here, on certain days, liturgies are held for Orthodox Ukrainians and Georgians.

Translated by Google The church was founded in 1355 as part of the Augustinian convent by the Czech king and Roman emperor Charles IV. Consecration of St. Catherine was to thank this saint for supposedly saving Charles' life at the Battle of San Felice. A sad fate met the monastery in 1420, when, like many others, it was burned down by the Hussites. However, the monastery church continued to function with a break in 1737-1741, when it was magnificently rebuilt in the high Baroque. However, not long after, in 1784, the entire monastery was abolished by Joseph II. and turned into a military educational institution, which was replaced in 1822 by an institution for the insane. In 1841, the church was rededicated and services were held there until 1950, when it was handed over to the city museum. After that, the church was under the administration of the Order of Crusaders. From January 2010, liturgical services were resumed here. Masses were celebrated every Sunday from 6 p.m. in the old Roman rite.
