John Marshall High School

Story

John Marshall High School is located in Rochester, Minnesota and is part of Independent School District #535. The school is named for the longest serving Chief Justice in Supreme Court history, John Marshall. It is one of three public High Schools in Rochester. Enrollment was 1,599 students during the 2013-2014 school year, in grades 9-12.HistoryJohn Marshall High School is located in Rochester, Minnesota. It is currently the oldest public high school in Rochester. It was built in 1958 to accommodate the growing population as Rochester High School no longer was sufficient in size to house all of the students. In 1953 city leaders began to consider sites for the new high school that was to become John Marshall. According to a Rochester Post-Bulletin posting, "The city council and school board favored a Soldiers Field location, but were unsure the city could sell a portion of the park to the school board. The state attorney general ruled it could, and things started heating up. In March 1954, the Legion Post voted unanimously to oppose the location. In April, the city council declared a portion of Soldiers Field no longer needed for park purposes. Mayor Claude H. "Boney" McQuillan, a former pro boxer and Green Bay Packers player, opposed the location and vetoed the resolution. The council overrode the veto only to be countered by the mayor's refusal to sign a deed to transfer the land title. The argument went to court, where District Judge Arnold Hatfield ruled the veto was in order. John Marshall High School in northwest Rochester emerged from this turbulent beginning."Often referred to as simply "JM," John Marshall adopted "The Rocket" as an official mascot. The School colors are Red & Black. "A mark of excellence" is the motto of the school. After many years of complaints from students and faculty alike, major renovations began to expand the school's lack of space as well as bring it up to code in the summer of 2005. The new science wing was completed in the summer of 2006. The cafeteria was also improved. The reconstruction project was completed in 2008. In 2008, John Marshall celebrated its 50th anniversary since opening its doors in 1958.

Easily the worst school I've ever been too. The staff completely look the other way, it almost seems intentional. You can walk into class completely blazed and the teachers just pretend that you're completely fine, even when it's totally obvious. Some of the students are also braindead. It's pretty funny but also pretty depressing.

As a (Prior or Current) student at John Marshall High School. I feel a “review” is needed. I would like to remain anonymous (reason for account name). This school is very far from being “great”. The positive reviews you see and hear about this school are false. I found enrollment in this school to be my biggest mistake in my education carrier. All examples listed below I have personally experienced. Either directly toward me or indirectly toward another student while I was there. Pros - --- General Overview --- - Some really good teachers - - This is the only reason why I will not give them a 1 star rating - - - Really "good" band team - Clean "Most of the time" -... (I can't think of anything else) Cons - --- General Overview --- - Careless and Rude office staff that could honestly care less about a student's safety. - Massive Drug problem (Ex. kids are constantly drinking alcohol in class) - Students bully one another constantly. - Counselors and the Principal do not care about their student's safety or problems. - Agenda pushing (School is not a political playground, it is a place of education) --- Class Content --- - The regular classes are too easy. The teachers are more focused on helping the students that don't care about the content. This results in the rest of the students either goofing around or cheating off the smarter students. - Teachers tell students to allow other students to cheat. Because the students goofing around in class need "special treatment". - Teachers help students a lot during test, basically walk the student through the test. - The AP or Advanced classes are too difficult. The content itself is easy, however the classes are rushed. They fly through lessons and tests instead of taking the time to actually teach the content. Students spend their time cramming information into their heads instead of learning it. - Some of the teachers are awful. They just use the time in class to harass students - Content is “dumbed” down - --- Student Driving and Parking lot--- - Student parking lot is dangerous, kids are racing, drifting, goofing around constantly in the lot. As a result other students vehicles are constantly getting damaged. The parking lot has cameras, however they are not running a majority of the time. You get to pay money to have your car damaged (Good Deal) - - Staff understand the parking lot is bad, they just don't care - - ---Bully Policy--- - As stated above, Students constantly bully one another. Students are constantly harassing, arguing, or sending death threats to one another. Constant fights either in the lunchroom, restrooms, stairways or in the student parking lot. School states over and over that they have a strict bullying policy. However from my prior experience they DO NOT Honor that code. They don’t punish the students that bully (even with evidence). For example, a student (me) was "bullied" and a video appeared online with the entire event being recorded. The school stated that it was it was “Cyber-bullying” and there was nothing they could do. This video however was recorded on school grounds. As far as I am aware, they do not honor their bullying policy. There are several other events that have happen to me personally that validate this accusation. (-) Conclusion (-) As a (Prior or Current) Student at this school I find it important to inform others about this school. I am ashamed with this school's staff, teachers, students, policies, etc. I could go on and on about this school and the complete “joke” it is. This is not a “safe” school. Send your kid/teenager honestly anywhere else.
