Dr. Kane had obviously obvious looked at my chart. He had decided on a specific procedure for a specific reason, even before speaking with me. Testing showed problems with my liver. I wanted to know if this was a concern as I have a family history of liver cancer. When his assistants were unable to answer my questions Dr. Kane called me and treated me like a child. He insisted that he had done 20,000 of these procedures and knew what he was looking for. Unfortunately, he failed to understand that I had never been through one of these procedures and don't know anything about them. His "reassurance" was not helpful.
Dr. Kane directed me to schedule my surgery. I attempted to do so less than 16 hours later, but I was informed by the scheduling department that Dr. Kane had put notes in my file preventing me from doing so.
I then left one calm voicemail indicating my frustration with un-returned calls and stating that I was beginning to feel skeptical about continuing my relationship with their clinic. Instead of someone calling to reassure me as to their intentions and dedication to my treatment, Dr. Kane called me personally to inform me that due to my inability to play nice with him and his staff, I was no longer welcome at their clinic.
During my treatment Dr. Kane had decided to switch from the initially planned procedure to a different one. That he did this confused me, but the more disturbing action was that he did so without telling me or my primary care physician. I learned of the switch from the scheduling department and my PCP learned from me. Dr. Kane had not even filed the change in my chart so that my PCP would know about it during my next appointment.
None of the office staff was ever anything other than nice to me, but they had some aversion to returning calls when voicemails were left for them.
Having surgery has huge risks involved. You expect that the doctors and their staff are going to engender trust in their abilities as a physician. You expect them to treat you with compassion, understanding and respect from beginning to end. This never happened with Dr. Kane. He did not seem to care what questions or concerns I had during my consultation, as evidenced by his getting up and leaving almost immediately after telling him I had them. I felt as though this doctor, and this clinic as a whole, wanted to push me through as if I were on an assembly line.
I am angered by the treatment I received, but I feel relieved that Dr. Kane will not be touching me with sharp objects.
