Very fresh oysters. But if you’re really hungry you will need to either order a lot of eat something before/after as the portions are small and the menu is more tapas sized palates. But everything is very tasty. The waitress we had was a bit new so wasn’t too informative, but all in all a good experience.
Cannot even begin to compliment this gem of a place. The food, service and ambiance deserves a round of applause. This place knows exactly what they’re doing! The execution of the food from aesthetics, technique and flavour were *chef’s kiss! The wine list, showcasing the best BC wines — love a spot that has pet-nats and piquettes if you’re into natural wines. Solid date night, friends night or girls night spot.
A gem in gastown for BC low intervention wine selection where you can order half glasses to try a variety of bottles. The Oyama pate with pickled chanterelles was divine! The brie was cold by the time we got to eat it, so it was a pool of plastic as the cheese wasn't very flavorful. The inhouse sourdough was . We recommend for a stop over if in need of some fun libations.
My partner and I had the oysters, mussels, pâté, sikil pak, burrata, poached pear, 2 flights of wine 3 whites 3 reds, and a Glass of ice wine literally best thing to exist in planet earth. Plz try this if you get a chance Everything was absolutely to die for. The food was so well curated and prices are fair. The mussel and Pâté stood out to me the most but honestly it’s hard to pick favorites here. The broth the mussels were cooked in was heavenly, herbed, and rich although we got 2 spoiled ones which was off putting. I was a bit scared biting into each one as my second one was bad. I also felt the poached pear could go with a little more of that angelic cream: What really ruined the experience for me however was the terrible service. I understand people have off days but as someone who worked in the service industry when I was young, I’ve never had that bad of a day where I’d be rude to people to the level we were greeted with. One of the servers which had long brown hair had a massive attitude .No matter how hard I smiled at her she kept giving us death stares and was really judgmental when I was ordering, Giving me annoyed expressions note all I did was say what I wanted nothing more. This left me really confused, hurt, and honestly kind of insecure which was weirdly dehumanizing. Even my partner was like what’s her problem? Considering I dropped $200 on this experience I would’ve expected much kinder service with hopefully at least one smile. When I ordered we were also not told that the burrata would come with crackers not crostini like it said on the menu and the pâté, would not come with cornichon’s or mustard but rather some weirdly sweet limp mushrooms. I would’ve liked that communicated. Short blond haired server was much kinder though but still quite rigid, I’m sure maybe just shy though. Wouldn’t have minded only receiving service from them. Although she came by and kindly asked if we would like more bread for our pâté as not enough came with such a hefty portion which I thought was sweet until I saw the extra charge on my bill. By the time it reached our table 10-15 minutes later the restaurant was basically empty. I had already used our extra crackers to finish itmixed feelings about this not technically anyones fault just keep that in mind if they go “looks like you need more bread for that, would you like me to bring more?” It’s not complementary. I feel like some of these small details would not have bothered me as much if the servers were actually more inviting though I understand we are all humans and make mistakes. Ambience was lacking. Black wall in the back could do with something and maybe a bit more desiccated hanging flowers on right hand side beautiful brick wall. Loved the vibe though and the real candles.
We went to check out the new place in Gastown - Is That French. First impressions were good, the host was friendly and welcoming and the interior ambiance is well put together. The wine list are all BC wines, which is good as I love BC wines. Food was amazing in terms of aesthetics, technique, flavor and execution. We had the Royal Miyagi Oysters, Manchego and Burnt Lavender Honey, Duck Prosciutto and Pickled Strawberries, Candied Salmon and Yuzu, Cognac Pate and Sablefish Tiradito and everything was really good! The combinations of ingredients to form dishes appeared to be well thought out and emphasis is placed on sourcing local ingredients. I believe the menu will constantly change depending on availability of specific ingredients as well. Oh and the broken ceramic plates add a touch of playfulness to the experience. I highly recommend this place and will return.
Located in blood alley in Gastown. Oyster wine bar theme with a great selection of tapas meant for sharing and wine. We enjoyed our dinner and had the oysters, bone marrow and mussels.
Is That French is truly unlike anything else I have found in Vancouver - we desperately need more restaurants like this in the city! My first visit was amazing from start to finish. The entire experience feels like you're in a welcoming host's home, with staff knowledgeable on the food and wine pairings. The restaurant's vibe is relaxed, intimate and unique - it doesn't even feel like you're in Vancouver. The staff is friendly, approachable, clearly love what they do, and make amazing wine suggestions, without an ounce of pretentiousness. I actually found a new favourite wine thanks to their recommendations. The rotating food and drink menu mean I can keep going back and every time it feels new and fresh. This is what Vancouver needs more of, I will definitely be coming back and bringing friends.
Really delightful way to spend an evening. Pleasant, informative, and patient service paired with top quality food and local wines. My party enjoyed the oysters, duck pate, tuna aburi, beef tartare, and even the bone marrow & sea urchin that was a bit beyond our usual comfort zone. Sadly the burrata and halibut cheeks were sold out when we visited, however I would be happy to go again to try these dishes. Overall the venue had a great vibe and made very effective use of the small space to create an elegant yet cozy environment. Bravo to the team!
Lovely spot but service could be better it's an appetizers place shouldn't be waiting 45 mins for food. The food was great though so if you are willing to wait go for it but definitely need the servers to check up.
Absolutely awesome food. We came on Thursday Jazz night. Great ambiance and service!
