The ladies that work at the Human Society are AWESOME!! My Greyhound was attacked by a neighbors dog during our walk. The people working that day went above and beyond the call of duty to help me. I will be eternally grateful!!!!

I would NEVER adopt a dog from the St. Joseph County humaine society in Mishawaka located on Grape Rd. They are A SCAM!!!!! My sister Connie Trujillo and I adopted a two year old female pitbull on 12/11/2017 she seemed very friendly. We originally did not want to consider a pit but that is pretty much all they had at the time. Kennels of pit bulls. Paper info next to her kennel said her name was Athena a two year old female they had for 6 months she was super friendly and safe for children 6 years old and up. We paid the $200 adoption fee then left to Petsmart to spend another $300 on crate, food, bed, toys and etc. At the pet store , Athena tried to attack a male associate. I thought maybe she didn't like men. Then when we took her home she was fine, even slept in the bed with my sister and two kids. Two weeks later she attacked my niece's girlfriend( who is black) I thought maybe she is not used to be around black people. Then a couple days later her daughter's 6 year old friend. I thought maybe she was territorial. My sister bought a lot of books to educate herself and work with the dog training. She made a vet appointment for a well check and get her associated with her new vet on 1/22/18 I went with her because of all the incidents she told me about and the dog is a very muscular dog and has knocked her over before. I have over 10 years experience with large powerful dogs. I've been taking my two mastiff to this same vet Parrett in Plymouth for over 10 years and never have I had an issue. I was walking Athena on her leash when she tried to attack a man. I walked her over to my sister and handed her the leash so I could go and buy treats as I turned around and walked away she attacked me from behind. I would of got bit but she only got a hold of my sweat shirt and not my arm. We were using a prong collar which are highly recommended by some trainers" I have personally always used them when I take my other dogs out". It did correct the pulling issues Athena had. After this incident my Vet told me she urgently recommended that I return Athena due to her serious aggression. Athena would not even let the Vet or any of the techs near to exam her. They had to stay on the other side of the table out of view of the dog because she was focused on getting at them. The vet said the dog was a great liability because of her strength she could seriously injure or kill someone in a short amount of time. We decided to take her back on 1/29/18 . We could not risk our kids or anyone else's children after seeing what we seen and knew. At first when we called they said they would give us another dog but of THEIR CHOICE who they felt would fit our family better. But then after she handed Athena over changed their minds and said there was nothing they could do. They kept saying NO REFUNDS there is a contract and the dogs temperament is not guaranteed. And the worst part is they tried to blame us and say we didn't keep the dog long enough (what until she actually injured someone) and that we used a prong collar (which is not illegal and in trainers opinions are a great and effective tool)and that we made her attack. Everyone has their opinion about prong collars and again they are NOT ILLEGAL! the shelter does not recommended. No where in the contract does it say that it is banned to use. All of those poor dogs in the shelter you would think they would jump to get them a good, loving forever home instead of eating and walking around in feces in those small concrete kennel. Maybe I made a mistake to choose a pitbull but I was assured Athena was sweet and gentle and I DID NOT want to be that person who condemns a dog because of their breed. I honestly just wanted to give her a chance and be that person who made a difference in a dogs life. I always thought responsible owners were people who took care of their animals, did the right thing. We took her back because that was the responsible thing to do. I know I could not live with myself if Athena hurt someone. St Joe HS do the RIGHT thing, offer my kids another dog!!

How pathetic can this place be. My dog was stolen and all I wanted to do was find her. But you won't let me look because you guys are too close to closing? Your open till 6. It's 5:15. And to shake your head and laugh at me and try to make me feel stupid, if I find out my dog is here you can bet I'm going to sue this place. Not for the money but my own dogs safety. Horrible place.

Sad visit, my Leonora went through the one way door. : ( On a positive note, they were very nice and I didn't have to bring her home to bury her in 2' of snow.

Definitely one of the cleaner humane society's we have been too. And really nice and helpful staff
