Long before the term "Consultative Selling" became a catch phrase, I've been practicing these techniques.
When I was 20 years old I was in wholesale sales of upholstered furniture for a long-gone company out of Calgary called John Tynan & Sons. This kind of position required being able to determine the best styles, fabrics, and colours each dealer could sell.
Dealers sought advice. How could you give them advice without finding out more about their store clientele? Only they could answer the questions I needed to advise them on the best choices for their stores.
That was the start of my Consultative Selling.
I then spent 17 years in Plastics, which covers virtually every industry there is. Trust me, most people have no idea of how many different types of plastics there are. Many people wanted to use plastics for applications that were better serviced with plywood. I advised those customers of that, despite losing a sale. It simply isn't in my nature to sell something that isn't the best for the job. Fortunately, most of the companies I called on appreciated having someone who would analyze their requirements and suggest the best valued product to suit the job.
Next, came 14 years in Wear Parts and Equipment for the Asphalt industry. When you talk to Equipment Managers, they want the longest-wearing material possible. The Shop Managers want to deal with their local dealers, and the Purchasing departments want the cheapest pricing. Proving to all the different departments that sometimes the best Value is not the cheapest price became my forte.
After 37 years of Consultative Selling in 3 different industries, I decided to become a Realtor®.
I can think of no better industry to utilize Consultative Selling. After all, there may be thousands of houses for sale, but only one is going to be "home".
After looking at several agencies, I felt that Hugh & McKinnon would be the right fit for me. They're locally owned and managed, since 1909 in fact. Anyone who knows me knows that I appreciate being able to support local business.
Hugh & McKinnon's offices were full of people who were busy working. To me, it felt like home, even before I spoke to the Owner/Managing Broker, Bruce Robinson. That conversation solidified my initial feeling that it was where I wanted to practice my craft.
In addition to Real Estate Trading Services, Hugh & McKinnon also manages Strata Properties and 3,500 strata developments, approximately 200 rental properties, and 15 commercial properties.
In other words, they can handle virtually any contingency.
I feel it's a good fit for me, and look forward to being of service to you, with any or all of your Real Estate needs.
