"Grab your lederhosen and turn up the polka! Enjoy a menu full of traditional German food, including favorites like Wienerschnitzel, Spaetzle, Kävetelli, Currywurst and Schweine Flugel. We have the largest German bier selection in the country with 50 on draft and over 100 in bottles. Share a boot with your friends. Prost!"

I lived in Germany for a year and can vouch the food is very legitimate and close to authentic. Drinks are awesome and priced very fair. The burger we ordered was humongous but really delicious. Service was awesome but a bit slow. Will definitely come back regularly.
The food was great and good service. They were busy on a Saturday night and we still felt well taken care of. We had raspberry framboise to drink which was great accompanying the strong but delicious flavours of the food. Portions were huge. It was starting to amp up for the night crowd when we left but looked like a pretty fun place to have some drinks with friends.
My female server is amazing. I was never rushed. She was able to answer my questions and tell me about items on the menu including the one's she had had. I had everything I needed. The Beef Stroganoff is amazing. I didn't like the griddle residue on my piece of bread but I did not mention it. I owned and operated business's myself. The size of the incredible piece German Chocolate Cake is well worth the price and was enough for me take some home and share it. She put my leftover cake in a very nice container and I had a walker so she put this in a bag. I don't drink alcohol but I can see how this would be a wonderful atmosphere and fun to be here. In case anyone thinks the prices are too high please try what you want and then decide. They can answer any questions you have about the menu and so many dishes, etc. to choose from. I went back to tell the pharmacy tech that has brought back a grilled cheese that is not your average grilled cheese and fries in a black container thank you for telling me about this place. It is a little difficult to enter using a walker and I didn't see the part of the sidewalk missing and almost broke my walker and fell over the top but I didn't and a man walking by offered to help me if I needed help. It is uniquely designed and very clean inside. I am on a low fixed income that includes me being mandatorily retired by SSA at 62 years old so as much as I would enjoy trying more of their menu it will be a long time.
I’ve always enjoyed coming here, the food is generally good and the environment is chill, good amount of space as well. I went last night and our server female didn’t seem to thrilled or even like a “people person”. Service was rushed then slow. She never checked to see how our food was. The roast beef was a pile of lukewarm mush, left uneaten. Our table ordered 3 apps because the happy hour price $2 off but when our bills came, she said they don’t do that anymore. So why have happy hour signs posted all over and include it in the menu? Maybe tell us before or still honor it? Terrible customer service experience coming from someone who worked in the restaurant business for several years. I had to ask for the burger happy hour price to be changed on the check $2. Not a huge deal with the prices, but come on. People consider special pricing when choosing their meals/drinks. I will say my Wild West Berlin burger was a 10/10 along with the fries. **update 7/6 I came back and my experience was much better. The service was great, quick and attentive. I got the same meal because it was so good the first time. It doesn’t disappoint.
Hands down the best German food in Des Moines! The hospitality is amazing…ask for Tracy, she’s great ! The food is absolutely delicious and authentic. The beer list is extensive and pretty great. In a nutshell this place is absolutely a place to visit and have a good time !!! Thank you Tracy !!
I often meet my friends here. The beer selection is nothing short of amazing! Food is also always delicious. It's difficult to find sauerbraten on a lot of menus in German restaurants in the states but they have it here and it's seriously so good that I have to order it every time!!!
This was our first time eating at Hessen Haus. I got the Jager Schnitzel with the mushroom & onion gravy which was fantastic. My wife got the Turkey Melt which I thought was good but the spicy mayo was way too hot for her taste. They happily got her another one without the spicy mayo & she liked that much better. Our service was great & the atmosphere of the restaurant was fun & fit the German beer haus theme. I would definitely go back!
I was in Des Moines, Iowa and was craving for something different that I haven’t tried in Dallas. I bumped into this German restaurant called Hessen Haus. I ordered Jägerschnitzel. Besides, if you are in a German resto, you should get a schnitzel . Anyway, it is a tenderized center-cut pork loin, hand-breaded, fried and smothered with a mushroom and onion gravy. It was delicious and tasted like an authentic German dish. The ambience was fun and the service was great. Indeed a great dining experience.
I’ve been here about 10 times for various outings of drinks, apps, snacks, and dinners. Great food every time. Love their menu. Love their brats and pretzels. Spaetzle is bomb. 10/10 for me.
What a place! HUGE BEER OPTIONS both in size and in variety. Tasted unbelievably good. Sat outside so I can’t say much about indoors but there was more than enough room inside and outside. comfy seating options outdoors and our waitress tended to us very well. Definitely a must visit place when in Des Moines. Get your German beer fix here!
