Such a great place to bring the kids, it's like walking back in time. The staff were so amazing, with a few out in the village working just like our ancestors did back in the day. The train ride was great, very friendly and I formative conductor, watching the steam engine pull the cars really makes you feel like your in the past.
A well spent weekend trip. Took my kids for their first train ride. It is great to see the station, engine and train. Staff is very friendly and professional. You can not reserve the seat on the train and it is first cum first serve basis. However it should not be problem to get a seat but it may be sold out. So try to reach early. Train ride is short but good experience. Don’t forget to collect your flat pennies.
Great experience for the kids, you get a souvenier crushed penny by the steam train. Also you can dress up as a conductor and take some cool photos of yourself at the station
Cute short, slow train ride! Definitely fun for kids. Was very cool to watch the conductor disconnect the locomotive and then spin it around so he can attach it to the front of the train on the way back
Great heritage. Good to see it has been preserved well.
The train and history is cool and the only reason this is a three star review and not lower. If you’re travelling from out of town for this specifically, don’t because it’s a five minute ride in total with a giant break in the middle to make up the advertised thirty minutes. Staff were hit and miss…maybe two of the five had personality and were enjoyable. All around it was not a great experience
I love these genuine old fake history sites, that try to tell you how wonderful development was and how grateful the natives were for having their whole way of life destroyed. You can have so much fun if you ignore the truth.
1 Zero transparency on tickets sale. Was told it was sold out but there are so many seats on the train. 2 Why can't this be reserved online ? It makes planning impossible if you come from Toronto. 3 kids are very disappointed as we drive 3 hours for this. It would be helpful to know ahead of time tickets would be sold out at 10am. 4 Staff absolutely has no sympathy. Cold and not helpful. Don't waste your time to come here after 10am. Plenty of other places to go in Huntsville if you don't want to ruin your family mood for the whole day
Loved the portage flyer train just before the departure they give a brief history on how the train used to run back in the days. It was such a beautiful ride and the steam engine was a classic 1926 engine that's still kept in working condition. Apparently from Royary Village to Fairy Lake the train runs and in the old days it use to run a bit further than Fairy Lake station. This train used to operate to Lake of Bays and Barry's Bay before it took a pause and went to St.Thomas before it was returned back to Heritage Place Train Station where the locals still keep it running. Overall a fantastic experience and would love to ride it again.
We had an absolutely great time at the railway! Highly recommend this if you have a train fan and are in the area. We were worried about the trip length due to previous reviews, but it is actually 7 minutes each way according to the lady at the front desk. Before the start of the trip there is a recording, you then take the train to a station where you can see the engine inside the train basically you look at the fire and then they take the steam engine and turn it around to drive you back. There is an oral presentation inside the train museum where you can see a replica of an old train station office. Total time was 40-45 minutes. The ticket is not expensive and you can ride the train more than once on the same day with the cost of admission.
