Story

Bethune Memorial House, a National Historic Site of Canada in Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada, commemorates the life and achievements of Dr. Henry Norman Bethune. Impatient and restless, he was inspired by a sense of duty to others and a love of the outdoors. In Bethune, these characteristics were the seeds of a battlefront surgeon, activist, humanitarian, inventor, teacher and artist. The historic site explores the roots and examines his legacy. Dr. Bethune spent the last two years of his life in China, serving as a teacher and as a surgeon of the communist Eighth Route Army. The house was built in 1880 to serve as the manse of Knox Presbyterian Church. Malcolm Bethune became the minister of Knox Church in 1889 and, a year later, his son Norman was born in the manse. The Bethune family remained in Gravenhurst until 1893 when they moved to Beaverton, Ontario. Thereafter, the house was occupied by a succession of ministers. In 1973 the house was purchased by the federal government's Department of External Affairs. Restoration of the building was subsequently undertaken by Parks Canada, which is now responsible for its operation. In August 2002, then-Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, visited the house and unveiled a bronze statue of Dr. Bethune erected by the Town of Gravenhurst. It is located on the main street alongside the notable Opera House.

A must visit and scared place for a true Chinese hero. Loads of artifacts depicts the true life of this medical pioneer in WWII.
It was interesting to learn about Dr. Norman Bethune and his contributions to the health industry around the world, especially in Canada and China. The exhibition is in English, French, and Mandarin, and some parts are even interactive! It was also cool to visit Bethune's childhood home. The site was well preserved.
Definitely a must-visit! Dive into the untold narrative of Dr. Bethune, from his upbringing to the beliefs that drove him. The calligraphy art that outlines his journey is a standout—especially cool if you've studied it in Chinese classes. Although most visitors are Chinese no surprise given his status as an international hero who sacrificed his life to save people in China, it's a captivating experience for anyone interested in humanitarianism.
Very impressive and after we visited the historic building with old furniture and decorations, we really knew more about Dr. Bethune, who had a splendid lifetime with many stories. What a genius he was with kindness and sympathy! I hope that one day we will have a kid who can become an excellent doctor like him!
This was a wonderful site to visit. Lots to see and do, very interactive exhibits and the staff were fantastic. I admit, I had never heard of Dr. Bethune, and was so happy to learn about his contributions. We came to visit because of the Xplorers program my kids love that program! and really enjoyed our visit.
