In early August 2022, after being refused an emergency visit from this clinic, my 5 month Labrador pup died of rhubarb poisoning two days after eating a small quantity. I had called the emergency number associated with this clinic on two accounts. After seeing my pup drooling, having diarrhea, tremors, and vomiting for several hours, I was told on my first call with the clinic by the female veterinarian on duty that it was nothing to be too worried about. She offered some advice to monitor him and make sure he got enough fluids etc, but to wait it out. By the next day he thankfully got much better, I thought he was recovered. However, after feeding him his regular meal later in the day, he got much worse, and after vomiting 'nothing', meaning there was nothing left to vomit for 4 hours, I called the emergency vet at 1 am a second time, explaining all the symptoms and to get him treated. The on-duty vet called me back and dismissed the seriousness of the matter, he did not offer any advice on treating my pup, and said “He would NOT call in his staff for something that had been going on since the previous day” and to make an appointment the following morning. I found this vet to be condescending and arrogant, and rather mean sounding over the phone, and trying to look past this, I mistakenly and tragically believed his assessment that it wasn’t serious. We found our pup solid as a rock under our bed the following morning, after suffering profusely throughout the rest of the night. Both my husband and I were completely distraught, the whole experience was so shocking, painful and heartbreaking. I strongly regret having listened to the vets of this clinic and would never recommend it. Clients should be careful and trust their own judgements before following the advice of these vets. After speaking to more vets since the incident, as well as doing further research it has become apparent that any kind of poisoning should never be taken lightly: "As with most cases of poisoning, prompt treatment is critical to a successful outcome." It seems apparent that as with many vets in the Soo region, this clinic was overwhelmed and short-staffed, however I would have preferred this to have been the response of refusing my pup, rather than falsely assessing the seriousness of the situation and treating it lightly. I would have continued seeking for answers and for emergency assistance wherever was available.
Would give this place 0 stars if I could. First off, the way the phone was answered was totally unprofessional. I just called asking for advice on how to attend to my sick cat, and was immediately prompted with a $25 dollar fee just for advice. Absolutely absurd. You must be a scumbag if you think that I'm going to pay you for talking to me on the phone. You clearly don't care for animals the way you should if the only thing you revolve around is money. Who ever that was that was talking to me on the phone, you are the most unprofessional secretary I have ever spoke to, and you definitely shouldn't be working with animals. You make me sick.
I’ve brought numerous cats and dogs here to receive their shots as well as get spayed/neutered among other surgical procedures and Dr. Shaw has always done an exemplary job. She and her staff are great with the animals and treat them with genuine compassion and dignity. Most recently I had to bring one of my dogs in that was really sick and she got him in and on the mend fast.
I don’t like the vet. But, Mom pay the bills and they are nice to her. They give me treats and tell me I’m a good girl!!!!
From the bottom of my heart and soul, I want to thank Dr. Shaw, Pat, Taylor, Alexa, Candice and Hailey for their VERY kind and compassionate care of My Boy Sam as he crossed and transitioned Rainbow Bridge. Thank you again on behalf of all my family and Sam as well for the card and Sam's nose print. It meant a lot
Not my usual vet, but they were the OnCall for the emergency line and they did such a great job. Very kind, thorough, and honest. Really eased my mind and made the whole situation so much less stressful.
My visit was very positive. Dr. Shaw treated my dog excellently. He's a very senior dog and getting nervous of everything but seemed fine while he was there and thankfully didn't have to stay longer than necessary adding to his anxiety. Thank you!
Dr. Megan Shaw and all the staff at Great lakes Animal clinic are terrific...we have two new dogs...both around a year old...WE purchased the puppy package which was A REAL BARGAIN! Because all visits are covered...we have popped in a couple of times with ...what others would consider maybe trivial concerns...NOT ONCE where we made to feel like we were taking advantages of our package or inconveniencing the clinic...or just being over cautious.. we were met with genuine concern and all questions where answer..Megan was attentive and treated our new babies.... like they were just that.. babies! She was sweet with them...talking to them...and checking them out head to toe...even when we've booked in for a weigh in...and just a once over! They are a very caring and capable staff...and we are very happy that Megan is our puppies...doc!
