Glendale Cemetery

Story

Glendale Cemetery is a cemetery and historic district located in Akron, Ohio. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.HistoryGlendale Cemetery was founded in 1839 by Dr. J.D. Commins. Here statues of prominent citizens, an avenue of stately mausoleums and a collection of headstones tell the story of Akron’s past. Originally known as Akron Rural Cemetery, Commins modeled the design of the cemetery after Boston’s Mount Auburn Cemetery, which he visited in 1838. Glendale is a picturesque romantic landscape with its curving roads, use of promontories to create vistas and a variety of architectural styles that draw upon ancient building forms. Mausoleums are modeled after Egyptian, Greek and Roman temples or Gothic churches. Nineteenth-century accounts described Glendale as “beautifully laid out in romantic drives and walks” and note its role as an area park and tourist destination.Originally, the cemetery had a stream and two bodies of water—Willow and Swan Lakes. Due to the increased development surrounding the cemetery during the late 19th century, the natural spring that fed the lakes dried up. The superintendent of the cemetery at that time proposed running a pipe to the Ohio and Erie Canal to re-water the lakes, but this was never realized. Today the open space or Great Meadow recalls the scale of Swan Lake and several mausoleums have small foot bridges that once crossed over the stream fronting them. Distinct sections of the cemetery are devoted to the Masons, Akron’s Jewish community and infants and children. The Civil War is prominently commemorated in Glendale Cemetery. The Buckley Post of the Union Army has a large memorial marker surrounded by 50 headstones located on the northern plateau. The 1876 Gothic Revival style Memorial Chapel was constructed by the Buckley Post and has been recently restored.

Glendale Cemetery in Akron, Ohio is a "must see" cemetery. It's the oldest cemetery in Akron. The buildings, mausoleums and tombstones are unique in many areas. The Civil War Chapel is still used as a stopping point after Memorial Day parades. The cemetery is probably now nearly 200 years older or older. The lush grounds are hilly and simply beautiful to visit. I lived in the caretaker house till I was nearly 5 years old. We lived in the upstairs apartment that Carl and Margie Warren had made and my birth paternal grandparents lived downstairs. When it rained hard the basement would flood to the top stair on the first floor. It was a quiet place to live and my birth grandfather was caretaker of the cemetery. It was a busy time then. I recently went back and met with my cousin, Fritz, the day after his Mom's funeral, my Aunt Margie was buried. The historical house was now having to be rented to the caretaker and the wooden garage had been taken down decades before when it rotted. The office looked a little different on the outside, but real different on the inside. On July 2nd, 2014, the cemetery looked great. The Civil War Chapel and Bell Tower were still there along with many mausoleums we used to walk by quite often. We used to walk all over the place there. Chief Big Buffalo worked there for awhile. He used to be in Bill Cody's Wild West Show until Bill Cody died. He was with a carnival when he quit and moved into a hotel in downtown Akron. He always wore a garland of cloves to ward away evil spirits and used to babysit me when my birth father didn't know what to do with me. I loved Chief so much. He told me many fascinating stories and even adopted me as his Cherokee granddaughter. I didn't find out till 2012, that my brother and I are 1/8th Cherokee because my birth paternal grandmother was 1/2 Cherokee. Through looking in lists of different tribes compiled from the U.S. Government and through DNA testing, by Ancestry, it appears that she may have been a full Cherokee. Chief Big Buffalo and my birth family, who have passed, other than Fritz, are all buried in Glendale in a section they set aside and bought decades ago. It's a historical site worth visiting.

Lovely views and awesome place filled with artsy mausoleums. They have events from time to time which I'd recommend. Staff and service is pleasant.

My daughter is buried here in babyland. It is a beautiful place to visit. My only complaint is that the last time I visited, I noticed people have been driving over the graves and my little girl's headstone was dirty.

First of all, this cemetery has beautiful grounds and very interesting grave sites. However we saw a few headstones that were heavily covered in mud and grass clippings which seemed very disrespectful.
