When my furnace went on the fritz, GEM was the most responsive company. The smaller outfits sounded a bit overwhelmed by the demand, but GEM appears to be large enough to fill the gap, even though they could not come out until 72 hours after the call. In the meantime, we were able to finesse some function out of the boiler. The technician told me it was time to clean the heat exchanger, commenting that it's a very service-friendly and accessible component on our unit. He quoted a price of just over $700. He finished the task in about 15 minutes, explaining that their pricing on that service is based on more complicated boilers. Not having flexible pricing that can be decided by a technician does not benefit the consumer at all. I don't really care that "it all comes out in the wash"--for THEM. I'm grateful that GEM came through this time, but they've made me all the more motivated to find a more sustainable alternative. Technicians were friendly and professional.
