Forks of the Credit Provincial Park

Story

Forks of the Credit Provincial Park, located in Caledon, Ontario, Canada is part of the Ontario Parks system and is part of the Niagara Escarpment biosphere. The park is on the Bruce Trail. The Credit River runs through the park. Other notable features of the park include a kettle lake and talus slope.HistoryIn 1968 the Niagara Escarpment Study recommended that a park be established in the Forks of the Credit area; this recommendation was then accepted by the Government of Ontario. It was officially regulated as a provincial park in 1985.Historic mill and damThere has been a mill in the area since 1820. In 1885, John Deagle bought the mill at the top of the falls and converted it into an electrical generating station, damming the river and creating Cataract Lake. Later the station was purchased by Ontario Hydro, and was eventually shut down in 1947. The dam was destroyed in 1953, and the lake drained. The ruins of the mill and powerhouse are located within the park.

One of the first places I hiked in and still one of my favorites. Sadly, I remember the days when the parking was free! LOL Other than that, it has a great mixture of flat and slightly more rugged trails that meander around a beautiful Lake and also head down into the valley and to an impressive waterfall. Sadly, the trail is still blocked at the waterfall and does not allow one to complete the lower loop, but the trail around the lake does form an upper loop. Fairly easy and relaxed hiking. Great in all seasons.

Great park for hiking all year. Dogs need to be on a leash sadly and it gets busy in the summer. The lake is gorgeous and easy to get to, while the falls are a much longer hike but worth it. Parking is paid and enforced in summer.

This is probably one of the best driving roads close to toronto, if not the best. There's a lot to do if you come during the day when the weather's nice. A couple of nice parks around and this one is no exception. Drive the forks as many times as you can, the hairpin is my favorite part 😉

Loads of potholes at park entrance making it a bit challenging to drive into but once your in its a very nice park. Would recommend the trip as I had a lovely time. Many trials hiked. Bathrooms provided and pay parking

I like to go hiking in this park particularly from the West end where it is more interesting. The waterfalls at the north end is now inaccessible due to the instability of the area. To see some of the waterfall you have to approach the area from the lower portion. Be careful.
