This was the first UNESCO world heritage site visited during our stay in Newfoundland/Labrador. It’s also only recently obtained its UNESCO status so a lot was kind of “new”. Booking the hike early was good so that we could definitively obtain a spot. The exhibit appears thin in terms of quantity but did a good job of explaining everything. You must arrive early for your guided tour and I do believe that you can only go out there if you have a guide. We drive out to the hike location as the interpretation centre is not within walking distance. From there, the trek is moderately challenging because of the uneven boggy grounds, despite having a marked trail. Waterproof footwear and extra warm socks are recommended as well as layers of clothing so that you stay warm. The landscape is barren bog mostly so there isn’t a lot of trees to break up winds or use the bathroom… go before you leave! The guided tour is fantastic. It is a must if you are heading out (not only because it’s mandatory but) so that you can gain a proper appreciation for the site’s history and significance. You can walk upon the approved areas where the fossils are found and are given booties to wear on the site. Upon reaching the site (very near the shore), we change into the booties and could walk on the surface of the fossils and view up close, the fossils in question. The hike is about 1.5 hour each way so it is a half day event. It is an amazing experience! So happy we went.

This is a must-do for anyone visiting Newfoundland especially with kids! You begin at the Edge of Avalon Centre and follow a guide car through the protected zone till you get to a parking lot a couple of kms from the fossil site. From there its a pleasant easy stroll with the guide explaining the 'Artic tundra' environment - the fossils themselves are great and kids had a blast finding and matching them to pictures provided by the guide. All in all, a fun and informative experience.

Excellent and lovely people offering a vision of the coast from Portugal Cove South to Cape Race. Of course you sign up for the UNESCO Mistaken Point hike which is brilliant for those who love 1. A magnificent coastline and 2. A vision of a past which is incomprehensible to non paleontologists. Well worth the stop. Roads need repairs.

All the information you need before you head to Mistaken Point, one of the newest UNESCO sites and home to some of the oldest fossils in existence.
