East Greenbush Community Library

Story

The East Greenbush Community Library serves a chartered special district, including the town of East Greenbush, New York and portions of the town of Schodack, New York under contract, bringing the total number of patrons to nearly 30,000. The library is also a member of the Upper Hudson Library System, a resource-sharing consortium consisting of the 29 public libraries in Albany and Rensselaer Counties. Located in southern Rensselaer County, New York, off Route 151 (Luther Road), the library shares a 39 acre tract of former farmland with the YMCA and Hawthorne Ridge, a multi-use senior housing complex. The East Greenbush Community Library is a busy, suburban library with holdings of 98,622 items, 26 public computers, four meeting rooms and programming for all ages. In 2011, 228,146 people entered the library. The “Friends of the Library”, made up of a dedicated group of volunteers, runs four lucrative book sales each year, supporting the library’s collection and programming.HistoryOriginally, library services in East Greenbush were provided by two “association” libraries that opened in the 1940s. The Katherine Wirth Memorial Library was located in the basement of the Clinton Heights School (now the East Greenbush Town Hall) and the other was located in the Bates Building on Columbia Turnpike. In 1974 the two merged, with the main branch located in the Bates Building. In 1984, the collection was unified and moved to a 2,670 square foot area of the Town Hall. In 1988, residents voted in favor of creating a taxing district for the library that made it a true town library. Today, residents vote directly on the library budget and the governing Board of Trustees.Building ConstructionBy 1995, it had become evident that the library needed more space, and the long process of building the library’s present site began. The architectural firm of Lepera and Ward designed a 2.45 million dollar project with 20,000 square feet of space on 10 acres. Ground-breaking ceremonies were held on June 6, 2000, and the new library celebrated its grand opening on March 4, 2001.

Unfortunately, my visit was not amazing as I had two unpleasant interactions with one woman from the front desk. The tone she had for both interactions felt passive aggressive there were some instances where I would even say she was being actively aggressive and nearly pretentious.nnSeems like this library does a lot for the community, which is amazing. Later on I had talked with a woman who worked in the children’s area and she was very friendly and helpful, which I am grateful for. I’m sure this library is great, but I cannot shake the negative experience with someone who is supposed to be the first person you see.
The children department has improved tremendously since they changed staff. Playgroup use to be so horrible to sit through. Now the staff running it actually really make it fun for the children and seem like they enjoy doing it!nnThe only downfall is that my allergies go crazy anytime I come here and sit on the floor! Not sure how old the carpets are but maybe this will be the next upgrade at some point. Either way I’m super impressed thus far… even down to the new globe! The children’s department definitely needed this change of staff!
It is almost perfect. The only problem for me is noise. In my opinion, a library must be in perfect silence. But this one is not. Staff talks quite loudly. But they are friendly and the place is really good overall.
I love the East greenbush library. My daughter, who is 10 years old, loves their reading corner, summer reading, books, and fun entertainment. You should go and visit!.
Really enjoyable library they do so much with the kids and for the public
