Dunbar Community Centre

About

Dunbar Community Centre is a non profit society operated jointly by the Vancouver Park Board and the Dunbar Community Centre Association.

Story

What does your Community Association do?

As many local residents know, the Dunbar Community Centre is operated JOINTLY by the Vancouver Park Board and the Dunbar Community Centre Association, a volunteer-managed, non-profit society and registered charity, whose vision is to represent and advocate for the recreational, social and educational interests of our community. When you sign up for a class, you become a member of the Association.

Financial responsibility for running the centre is shared by Park Board and the DCCA. The Vancouver Park Board uses your tax dollars to pay for grounds and building maintenance, facility utilities, fitness centre and spin cycle room equipment and staff, and most programmer and building supervisor wages.

Using funds generated primarily by programme fees, the Dunbar Community Centre Association pays for everything else, including most program instructors and supplies, front desk staff wages, seniors’ programmer wages, child-minding employees and service subsidy, special event subsidies, your Community Centre brochures and office operations. The total dollar value of the Association’s activities average about $1,000,000 annually.

The Dunbar Community Centre Association has also been instrumental in planning and funding:

-Acquisition of new Fitness Centre Equipment

-Construction of the Fitness Centre’s Weight Room

-Expansions of programmable space, including construction of the Dunbar Room and renovation of the former caretaker suite.

-Facility asbestos removal

-Needs assessment study and 50% of the funding for the Feasibility Study for a new Dunbar Community Centre

-Community Centre furnishings

-Christmas Tree lights and lighting party

-Salmonberry Days fair and November Craft Fair

-Student Bursaries

Your Community Centre Association works hard to provide for the recreational, social and educational needs of our community and to ensure that all its funds are retained for reinvestment in the Dunbar Community Centre.

This facility and the surroundings are the one we really appreciate as a local. Well maintained and clean.
This place is one to go if you are new here in Dunbar. It offers many good services.
Small gym but makes the most of its space for Covid.
Great community center, you dont need the fancy gyms with an affordable place like this around. Competent staff, facilities are a little dated but they work. It has squash courts which are somewhat of a rarity in the city. Gym is a decent size. Sauna and jacuzzi for post workout.
I only know about the fitness centre. It's ok, slightly overcrowded with machines and benches and they don't allow chalk. It would be great to see a full squat rack, a dedicated bench press station, and a better layout.
Interesting fact: The two squash courts here are reasonably priced and easily available. So instead of spending an exorbitant fee to join an expensive private squash club, you can book a game at Dunbar. And if you have a OneCard, you get a good deal on a pack of 10 tickets.
