Double JJ Resort

Story

Double JJ Resort is located in Rothbury, Michigan. It is a four-season resort which opened as the Jack and Jill Ranch in 1937. It has been the location of the Rothbury Music Festival two times, and has hosted the Electric Forest Festival annually since 2011. Double JJ has expanded to include a golf course, an indoor water park, and conference center to go along with the original ranch.HistoryIn 1914 George and Mary Stouch left their home in Central Germany and settled on 80acre of farmland in Western Michigan. The farm included a brick home built by the Kennedy family in 1894. The land also embraced a large, spring fed lake, Big Wildcat Lake.In 1930 daughter Roma was employed as an instructor at a private school for girls. She was the first to use the lake setting and surrounding woods at their father’s farm commercially. She presented a summer camping experience at Wildcat Lake to her students, hoping to get their parents approval. Roma would be the councilor and instruct 8 to 12 year olds in outdoor camping, crafts, swimming, drama, dancing, and sports, including horseback riding. Her project got parental approval, and her first year brought 23 girls to her camp. The camp was named “Cedar Shores” because of the hundreds of white cedar trees surrounding the lake. A stone wall at the corner of Water and Clay road stands today with an embedded bronze plaque marking the site of the first family business attempt. The deep depression of the early thirties cut short Roma’s efforts and the Cedar Shores experience faded into history. The beauty of the lake and ease of camping was well known in the community, and during the summer of 1933 the family invited local church congregations to send their children to the farm for a supervised, well counseled summer vacation. This was the Cedar Shores experience two years later, but with kids. To honor their young guests the family renamed the farm “The Jack and Jill Ranch.” Although the kids' ranch remained only two years (followed by a more grandiose camping experience) the name Jack and Jill Ranch was a success beyond imagination and the property was called by that name until the mid-1970s when the owners decided to change the name to the Double JJ Ranch Resort, and in 2009 to the Double JJ Resort.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was a bit lackluster, but hearty. We loved the ice cream shop and general store. The life guards in the water park were friendly and very helpful. We found everyone to be extremely friendly. Our room a.c. was dismantled (as in pieces) and our icemaker was also broken. It was in the middle of the summer, so we were miserable. The front desk staff was very sweet. Although they were unable to have it repaired, they sent us up a large bag of ice. They also offered to move us. Since it was the middle of the night, we declined, moving just wasn't practical. We were very disappointed about how hot it was, although the room was great otherwise. It was huge, had a full kitchen and many other cool perks. Although we were disappointed about the state of the room a.c., especially considering the rates they charge, we found everyone to be very nice. I would still recommend this place , as long as you don't mind the hefty price and inspect your room carefully upon checking in. After a full day and evening of activities, when you're tired and the repair staff are gone is not the time to get unpleasant surprises. All, in all, this is a fun and unique getaway. We felt the friendly, genuinely nice staff made what would have been a disastrous stay, great. We left with great memories and can laugh about the room issues instead of feeling angry. We do wish we could have afforded to stay longer. We also plan to go back. I had heard negative things, but have to say that I was impressed at how friendly and nice EVERYONE working there was, even in the midst of a problem. There are also so many cool activities and places to explore. I would recommend a week long stay if you can afford it. I just don't think you have enough time to see and do everything in less time. If you can only afford one night, add the water park passes and spend your time there! We felt there was something for everyone in the water area. Lounges, huge indoor/outdoor hot tub, swimming areas, toddler area, tube rides, food area and even lockers. The life guards were friendly and helpful while still being professional and concerned with safety. This really is a fun, friendly and unique vacation with something for everyone!

Book a cabin as part of a wedding I was attending. For the price of the cabin I expected a lot more. The furniture was old and dated. The couch felt like you were going to be swallowed up and very uncomfortable . The bed was cheap and the linens were old and worn. The cabin felt like it was cleaned just enough to make it presentable . The overall resort looked old and shabby. The restaurant at the main building was worthless. The service was awful and the waiter looked like he just woke up from a party the night before and didn't take a shower. The breakfast buffet was cold and not that good. I do not recommend staying here. I would of found a different hotel if I had to attend a wedding here again.

I use to love staying a weekend here with my family and enjoy all the activities. But for the last few years, it seems to be going down hill with customer service. It's always been expensive but at least staff was friendly and respectful. Recently I helped my friend with a wedding she had there. Piece of advice, if you plan an event there, and they say Julie is your event planner, REFUSE! She was horrible. No communication. She did not return calls or emails. During the wedding she was rude and never informed us of anything. When dinner was about to be served we had to ask her repeatedly about it. The food was "ok". But for that price I would have expected much better quality and way better service. They didn't have some of the liquor that was on the bar list so they had to go to the store and get it, and 2 hours later, we had the alcohol for the dollar dance....after half the reception guests had already left. They messed up the cabins for everyone. I Booked a cabin with a king bed and got a queen. The bride booked one style family cabin and they gave her the other style causing her daughter and son in law to have to sleep in bunk beds. Absolute nightmare start to finish. My advice, just don't trust there event planner and do it yourself if you decide to have your event there.

Customer service was an A +. They made sure we were taken care of from the beginning of our stay until we left. We purchased the golf package and received a free breakfast, overnight stay in the suites with a hot tub in the bedroom and had a great time! The food was great. Golf was fun but course is a little difficult but absolutely gorgeous. Just a great overnight getaway!

Our family spent four days here and had a blast! We especially loved the Saloon for dinner and drinks, the outdoor swimming hole and the water park. The cowboy town setting was really fun for the kids - they ran and chased other kids for hours. Made for great photos. The cabins were great, clean and thoughtfully arranged for families. Some of our kids did horseback riding lessons. Cute ice cream show and general store. We will definitely go back!
