I visited Don’s for nostalgic reasons. No longer baked-with-love on site. Don’s Bakery is a mass production shipped in from Barrie. No more fresh-baked $2 scones; I paid $23 for 6 butter tarts, a coffee & a bag of scones. Still delicious baked products. Ladies are kind. It’s just tasted so much better in the ‘80’s when the smell of fresh baking wafted in from the busy back kitchen.
Love this bakery, such great service and delicious baked goods. The scones are my favourite and I’ll always make sure to get some when I’m up in the area.
Went for the first time in a while, and was really disappointed. First, the employees were quite rude - just a terse “what do you want?” and generally unpleasant. Which, if the food is great, sure why not. However, was sorely disappointed with what we got. The butter tarts had a thin layer of filling and were dry. Then the apple fritter tasted like store bought icing. Of course, to add insult to injury, the prices were quite high.nnAll in all a very disappointing experience, and would not recommend. Part of the experience of spending time in Muskoka are the local bakeries. So, would recommend the Gravenhurst bakery as a much better alternative to Don’s.
We have been coming here for years but it’s not the same. My guess is the famous scones are now being made in a factory. Whatever it is, the texture and taste were wrong. They were bringing them out in crate loads already frozen. However, my main issue was the strawberry rhubarb crumble. We ended up throwing it out, it was all dry crumble and almost no fruit. Literally had to dig around and try to find some, Cost a fortune and was a big disappointment. No excuse for such a bad product at such a high price.
I have always loved going to Don’s when in Bala, however this is not the same bakery as in years past. Many items appear to be mass produced and shipped in. Chelsea buns were burnt, dry and with a topping so hard it broke off when eating. A “from scratch” bakery would not have allowed these to be sold, extremely disappointing. I would suggest choosing items in the display case rather than prepackaged items, Apple fritters were great and seem to be still made on site.
