Reviews, get directions and information for Diefenbunker: Canada's Cold War Museum
"Experience the Diefenbunker - Ottawa's most unique historic site. The Diefenbunker is a four-storey, 100,000 square foot underground bunker, built between 1959 and 1961. During the Cold War, government and military officials were to take shelter here in the event of a nuclear war. It was active as Canadian Forces Station Carp until it was decommissioned in 1994.For years, it protected us 75 feet underground and we knew virtually nothing about it. Today, it operates as a not-for-profit, charitable museum and boasts award-winning tours and programs. Visit us to immerse yourself in a piece of history."

This is a nice place for a family visit. We went there with the kids and they had so much fun. I think it’s more interesting for adults, but you can take the kids with you, just be ready to explain them everything they see. The place looks really old and it creates unique atmosphere. I was surprised to find out that you can celebrate your birthday there or have a quest activity with you friends.
This is difficult to get to, but get a friend to drive you here and offer to buy their ticket. I joined a tour and Gilles was great but it would still be fun just to wonder around on one's own. There are good directions/signage once inside. You can pretty much go anywhere but only select rooms are open. So glad I went.
SUPER COOL cold war era throwback museum. It's like going back 40 years for a couple hours. There's tons to see and read and some really impressive engineering. The museum staff is super friendly and there's plenty of guidance on the shelf guided tourVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
A very interesting and fun experience. In some ways this is more than a museum the whole facility is an artifact from the old barbed fences to the large blast doors all the way to going deep underground to see the vault. This a very fun and interesting trip and it works especially well on a hot summer day with the bunker being nice and cool underground. While I did not do the audio tour I would recommend doing that if you want additional information but the signs and displays are also very informative. Would certainly recommend this if you are in the area.
One of the coolest museums I’ve ever been to! If you have even the vaguest of interest in the Cold War or secret underground bunkers, the Diefenbunker is a fantastic way to spend a couple of hours. It’s about 30 minutes outside of Ottawa and I had a car so can’t comment on public transport, however getting there via car was very easy. Give yourself about 2 hours for the entire museum. Received free admission being a museum worker.
LIKES: Was quite the experience! Worth a visit if you're in the area and have ANY interest in cold war history, the Canadian Forces or just curious about bunkers and shelter life! Think about the Fallout series of games and genre and this hits right home with that! OPPORTUNITIES: I think in the future they could greatly improve this museum if they add more period specific props and equipment, open up more rooms to explore and somehow integrate activities as well. SUMMARY: Enjoyable 2-3hrs exploring a really neat chunk of Canadian Cold War history, affordably! Tickets were like $17!
What a nice find. We were welcomed with great smiles and told what and where to go. A must see if you like cold war ERA so please take your time to read and look at this great piece of history in full. I must say some of the rooms were closed due to renovations that we found very disappointing especially the Bank of Canada portion which had a sign on it that was scheduled to be open the day we were there, to find out it was opening the following day . We bought our tickets online to skip the lines and our toorguide Gilles was great.
Jewel of the Cold War history. Definitely a must! The guided tour takes 2h and feels like 1 min. Plan to come with extra time to revisit some of the places after the tour. Super friendly staff.
Located in Carp, Ontario, this out of the way piece of Canadian history during the Cold War was very interesting and educational. Our guide and author, Brian Jeffrey, made the tour very entertaining adding both Canadian wit and humor to an otherwise somber moment in history. Recommend taking the time to visit this site for those interested in Canadian military and political history.
This was an awesome impromptu and un planned stop. Totally worth the stop and time needed to visit and learn about our history. The most significant learning was about our Inuit population. Thank you! Highly recommended to drive and visit this place.
