What I’ve experienced at this college has been so common across friends that I’m confident many of you reading this will relate. I’ll outline these issues below with the hope that it sheds light on what to truly expect here. As an international student from the Philippines, I enrolled with the expectation of joining a diverse and inclusive community. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the reality. While the school is decent if your only goal is to complete a transfer degree, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for a broader cultural or academic experience. Despite being labeled an international college, It’s funny how the school shows off its “diversity” on social media, but in reality, they’re hiding what it’s really like. The diversity about 90% of students are from India. This overwhelming imbalance has deeply affected my experience, both academically and socially.nnAs a Business Administration major, I’ve had to do a lot of group work, presentations, and essays. In almost every group, communication was a major issue, many students weren’t able to speak clearly in English and often defaulted to Punjabi during discussions all the time, making me feel invisible, making me do 95% of the group projects, this affected my overall grade and wasn't happy. The college’s academic standards are relatively low. Professors are friendly and laid-back, but it often results in a lack of academic challenge. I've often had to deal with groups of Indian students crowding around staircases and bathrooms, blocking the way for others to pass, and at times the strong body odor in these areas made it very uncomfortable. I've also faced discrimination and unkind behavior, particularly from some Indian students.nnIf you're an international student reading this, I urge you find someplace else, otherwise you'll go though a lot of depression and despair.
This college just want money from students, teachers are not focusing on students hardwork, they are just focusing on failing all the studeNts . College main staff just sitting on stairs.
I was here for two years, not completing an associates degree but finishing high school with the accelerated program and then using the university transfer program to complete a portion of my first-year courses in Computer Science, primarily aiming for UBC. Here’s what they don’t tell you: UBC *requires* a 3.8 GPA to accept you as a transfer into computer science in Vancouver, when I uncovered this the hard way as I was about to complete my time in the college I thought my career would’ve been over but I was able to get into other universities easily.nnHigh School: The tiny floor of an office building across the actual Columbia campus that has been allocated for all high school students is legitimately fantastic. The students are all international, they make for wonderful friends, and on top of all that, the teachers are almost all excellent. Mr. Will is likely the greatest Math instructor I’ve ever had and he deserves the world, same goes for Mr. Keith. The sense of community derived from this tiny space is wonderful and it’s just what you need as a young person who’s most likely living on your own for the first time, it’s such a cozy space and I wish the rest of my experience in the college could have stayed this way. I befriended a very diverse set of people there and it exceeded all of my expectations by FAR. Zerlinda head of Student Life, Claire Nurse, and Rosemary Homestay are all so approachable and understanding of any concerns you may have.nnUTP or Associates Post high-school:The moment you leave that high school campus you find yourself across the street in what you would think would be a much better time, but by god, it is far worse. The building is certainly nice, and I appreciate that instructors are accessible by way of their “office hours” concept but my time at the UTP was so miserable because of Columbia specifically that I wanted to leave so badly. Firstly, 90% legitimately, no exaggeration of the people you will see are Indian and also completing an associates degree, so they’ll share most of your classes. I’m part-Indian myself, I never saw a reason to discriminate against these people, until I got to Columbia. Aside from the hazardously strong smell of Body Odor across the entire campus and every classroom you enter, the primary issue with all of the Indians is that they completely ruin the environment of every classroom. The majority of them don’t even try, and simply take courses because they have to in order to get their associates degree, and the remaining few have already taken years of these courses in their home country. Do you see the issue this creates? Me and all my friends found common ground among the absolute nightmare that was being given any group work, we would always have to seek out the minuscule few non-Indian people to work together with in order to scourge our grades and careers. It doesn’t help that all the Indians do is speak their local language, even in English class, even when instructors continuously tell them not to. If you are randomly assigned group members and must work with them, well, just calculate your GPA after failing that particular project. Messaging them on Teams is a completely lost cause and meeting them any time outside class to complete your work is impossible given they almost all live in Surrey. All I can give it is that it’s accurate to the university experience, as you absolutely MUST look up professors before choosing your courses otherwise you will not stand a chance. NEVER take any classes with Hayri Ardal, truly the worst professor I’ve ever encountered, an egotistical maniac who refuses to teach and may genuinely get off on torturing his own students. There are wonderful professors here but it’s not worth the torture.nnI advise you stay as far away from this place as possible unless what you’re only trying to do is complete High School, although really in every case just go to Douglas College or Langara. They’ll make it vastly easier for you to enter UBC as you probably want and the quality of life is night and day with Columbia.
2.5 years of depression and trauma .nWasted my precious years .nnFull of duffers and educated illiterates roaming in the lounges and doing cheap activities , thinking they look cool.nnMoreover they fail you in the courses , you need gods support to pass in ENG100.
The two girls working there had amazing hospitality! Food and chai is very good, if I lived closer I'd be here all the time.
