Cloud Gardens

Story

Cloud Gardens or "Bay Adelaide Park" and "Cloud Gardens Conservatory" is a small park in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It extends from the south side Richmond Street to the north side of Temperance Street, between Yonge Street and Bay Street, on 0.6acre of land.OriginThe site was given to the city in the 1980s as part of a deal that allowed the Bay Adelaide Centre to be higher than official plan limits. The developers thus gave a small portion of the lot to the city and spent $5 million to build a park.Landscape design and artDesigned by Baird Sampson Neuert Architects, the MBTW Group/Watchorn Architects, and two artists—Margaret Priest and Tony Sherman—the park features elaborate landscape design. The western part of the park includes a network of pathways and is edged by cluster of trees around a semicircular lawn. The eastern portion is marked by series of walkways climbing past a waterfall. Rising above this area is a monument to Toronto's construction workers designed by Margaret Priest and constructed by the Building Trades Union. It comprises squares that each illustrate one of the building trades. Thus one shows a network of steel rebars, another, a cluster of wiring. The namesake feature of the Gardens is a small greenhouse set to the cool and moist conditions of certain mountain ecologies. A walkway runs from the lower-level entrance to an upper-level exit by the waterfall. Occasionally, parkour teams of Toronto will train here. Cloud Gardens won Baird Sampson Architects a Governor General's Architecture Award.

Great place for a little break from the city. Small greenhouse, but very calming. Interesting array of plants. Worth the trip here if you’re in the area!
Actually really liked this spot! It’s in the heart of downtown, so it’s a nice dose of greenery. Nothing too notable in terms of plants, but it’s a quiet and small place to unwind and relax.
If they had someone clean up the garbage more often this park a great 5-star spot. Great looking park no play ground but fun for adults.
Urban oasis. The waterfalls and the greenhouse are refreshing. The juxtaposition between nature and the city is really nice.
Can be a little sketchy at times, but is a cool tucked away park space in the middle of the financial district.
Its a very small park. I used to love going here on my walk home. Has a little makeshift waterfall and some nice tiling along the side. Not a place you can spend a long time at but still nice to have something in the downtown core.
The greenhouse is a real tropical oasis hidden in downtown Toronto. Odd hours, but free to enter if you manage to catch it open. 80% humidity indoors and tropical collection of plants make it a really unique experience. Would definitely recommend. Better hours and a more maintained park would have made this a 5 star
