This eatery is attached to the Alt Hotel and is a convenient breakfast stop. We had breakfast here two mornings. The coffee was perfect per the hubby and the bacon was cooked the way we like it-crisp. I had the breakfast bite both mornings, while my other half had the waffle. If you have children the chocolate waffle looked "to die for."
Had a great breakfast here this morning. You can tell they use quality ingredients and I’ve never had such perfectly cooked bacon. They’re open early, friendly service, large portions.
The food options / selection was good. Customer service was great. Pricing for items is reasonable considering the hotel and area. What we ordered was very flavorful and served fresh to take back to our room. 4 star rating only because of costs vs. quantity of food.Food: 4/5
I came here with some expectations based on the interesting menu and reviews. The menu is very good. It not a large menu with balance. The names of the dishes are catchy. The venue is nice and welcoming. The staff are polite and friendly as expected in Canada. I ordered a cappuccino with waffle and fried chicken. The coffee came instantly so I believe it must have been from a machine. The quality of the coffee was average. The cup size was large as you can see from image, so they were generous with the quantity. To my taste the cappuccino tasted more like a latte it was very milky. Right after having this coffee I walked across the street to Phils and Sebastian and had cappuccino there and I experience a big difference in the quality of the coffee. Waffles and fried chicken I have tried a lot in the states in places like north Carolina, NYC, bay area and Texas. So my judgement could be slightly bias as I experienced some really large size chicken servings cooked in southern style with some tasty seasoning red or orange color crispy battery skin buttery with syrup drizzle on top with the thick waffles spongy inside and crispy outside. Everything was freshly made. The fried chicken here was breast with a very mild seasoning. The breast was dry inside and you taste more of the marination and coating than the chicken meat itself. That was in contrast to the chickens I had in the states. The chicken in the states where southern fried chicken that were definitely nicely brined and marinated giving nice juicy chicken meat. The chicken were whole pieces of thighs or beast with bone and skin. You get the nice crispy chicken skin. All these elements of a good fried chicken was missing. The chicken here almost tasted as though it was from a ready made package. Waffles also average at best. The waffles also tasted like the ones that were ready made package. This is a restaurant at back if alt hotel downtown, I expected more high quality preparation. I am surprised by the rating of 4.1 currently for this place. I may have missed on the other good dishes perhaps. I am in dilemma to go back or not again. Chicken and waffles is a classic breakfast dish. It is not that difficult to get right. But the chicken and waffle was average at best. I would give it a 2.5 rating for this specific dish and coffee. With a little bit more effort this dish can be better prepared. My overall rating is 3/5 including food , venue and experience. I recommend the cook study some chicken and waffle recipes on YouTube to get ideas how to improve this classic dish.
My favorite breakfast spot!!! Chix has delicious food and incredibly friendly staff. When you walk in, you're greeted into a bright, relaxing diner-style atmosphere. Every meal I've had there has been delicious and the unlimited coffee is the best. If you need suggestions or have dietary restrictions, the chef is extremely helpful and accommodating. It's attached to Alt Hotel, so it's convenient for travelers, but also a favorite for locals. It's family friendly and a great spot to bring your kids. Definitely check it out! Vegetarian options: Lots of options and the staff will be very happy to accommodate. They'll make excellent suggestions too! Kid-friendliness: There are always families in there with little ones : The kids like the food and the relaxing atmosphere Parking: Outdoor paid parking right across the street Wheelchair accessibility: Easily accessible by wheelchair Dietary restrictions: The staff is always more than happy to help with dietary restrictions. They are amazing at making suggestions to make your meal to your needs while tasting delicious.
Wonderful food, the bacon was generous, cooked to perfection and good quality to begin with. Potatoes were seasoned with a delightful flavor and just the right portion. Eggs and tomato were as to be expected. However, if you like coffee, I suggest you get it elsewhere as it was watery and not worth the price. I will definitely eat here again and have something else to drink. Lastly, the service was helpful and friendly- she was a delight to deal with. My husband had a fried falafel dish that he raved about.
The food and breuvages are good but a bit pricey for what you get in the end. However, we received a great customer service from the staff there. I just had bigger expectations from the menu and the food but it is fine in the end. Maybe I’ll just try another item from their menu next time since they have a pretty diverse selection within their menu.
Insanely expensive. $27 for a simple breakfast 1 toast, potatoes, 2 eggs and subbed falafel for bacon plus a cappuccino is astounding for small portions and lackluster flavor. Just no.
Stopped in for lunch today at Chix Eggshop. My wife has a gluten allergy so fried chicken is a very rare thing for her, and the chicken here was on point. Crunchy and delicious coating and the chicken was nice and juicy. The potato wedges were also really quite delicious. I had the poutine and quite enjoyed it, and our friend had the hot chicken sandwich and really quite liked it. The service was very quick and the staff were very helpful and accommodating for us, especially with the allergies. Would absolutely come back again. Dietary restrictions: Many gluten free options, were able to accomodate no eggs or dairy.
I’ve been here three times now and they are wonderfully consistent with their great service, no matter the time of day. Kristen is ready to greet you with a big smile and she made sure my dad and I got our food even though we decided to sit outside the restaurant for a dimmer environment in the morning. The food tastes absolutely amazing, it’s worth the price. I’m still thinking about my breakfast sandwich from last week!
