This restaurant is almost never open, and when they are open they only take a couple of customers. The meal that was served was just one piece of meat on an empty plate, and the table was set with a bowl of potato chips and a bowl of peas and corn as the side dishes. The appetizer salad took about 45 minutes to come out, and it was just plain lettuce straight out of a bag. It's a mystery how this place is even still in business. Don't waste your time.
Still popular after all these years! Very friendly service. Lamb chops & the cod are delicious. And the Greek rice pudding is the best you'll find anywhere. But don't shake you empty martini glass at the server--or she'll remember you for 40 years. J/k
LOVE this place! Soooo much is homemade from the bread to the salad dressings to the desserts. And the décor is AMAZING! Family owned/operated for something like 70 years. Chat with Maria for some great historical stories. Ex: Elizabeth Taylor ate here. Why? Ask Maria!
A classic joint, like the supper club vibe. Entrees are solid but starters and sides seems like they are from a grocery store down the street.
Ambiance was what I was hoping for when selecting Charcoal Oven for a nice dinner date. Beyond that, the food was bland, chintzy and way overpriced. I even had my leftovers brought to me in a Jewel Osco plastic bag, which I suspect is where they purchased the $50 steak that I ordered; and yes, they serve potato chips as your "potato" side. Unacceptable. All told, I'm not a fan of giving negative reviews, but in this case, the money spent truly was not worth the experience. I will not be returning here, but I do hope the establishment turns it around to what it seemingly used to be like.
The appetizer was so good. I loved the warm roles, even asked for more which the server told me we'd have to wait . The new roles tasted just as good but smalller and darker. Greek Chicken was recommended and the seasoning was incredible and there was a large serving., got to bring some home. I wasn't impressed by the small, bare salad or the bland vegetables. I did enjoy the wine too. Pricey food overall really good.
Beautiful interior but awful, overcooked, overpriced food right down to the frozen bagged vegetables. Word on the street is they steal tips from their employees. I hope they salvage the neon sign when this place is closed down.
I wanted to see what this place about being a food blogger and all. We came a few min past 5pm when the place opens, but the chef wasn't even there. He didn't arrive til 5:30. We looked at the menu and everything was overpriced. Sirloin steak was 48?! Yes you get soup, salad and sides but we didn't get to pick our soup nor sides yet the couple behind us got to pick how they want their potatoes mashed, which is what I prefer but got chips instead... The corn was definitely canned. The pastichio sauce tasted canned and had barely any meat and seemed low quality. The leg of lamb was ok...not the best lamb I've had. The bread didn't come with butter so I had to ask for it. The bread, salad and soup tasted good though. All I have to say is treat everyone equally. Just because someone is a regular it's not fair to just throw whatever to a new customer not asking how they want their sides or steak cooked. The atmosphere was nice though and old fashioned.
The charcoal oven in Evanston was where we ate two days ago. The food was very very good and I enjoyed it as much as I could as well. We had a fish dish and also a meat dish. Both were well to our tastes. This was the first time my partner and I ate there. The restaurant is embellished with very nice pictures in paint and in other paintings on the wall and paintings even in the restrooms.I will go back to that restaurant again and again because the food tasted good the service was great and the aviance was wonderful.
Want a quiet sit down at a white linen restaurant? This is your spot. So unhurried, you could negotiate a peace accord. Fish is something that you cannot miss, there are often delicious specials. Steaks and chicken are just as good. There is also Greek inspired items, so be sure to ask about them, especially if you are a vegetarian.
