The Gateway Park at Lock 8 was very quiet on Sunday, October 27, 2024. We had the entire park to ourselves that day! Wish that we had been there during the summer though, when all the flowers were in bloom, but it was still a great site to visit! A wonderful place of interest. There was ample free parking and it was a nice clean area to walk around in. We didn't see any large boats in the canal in the short time that we were there, but we saw some humongous ships at Port Promenade which I will be reviewing separately. I recommend that you include this park as one of your stops if you are planning to visit Port Colborne.
We were fortunate to be able to witness the marvelous technology of the canal lock system. The park has the perfect viewing area to see the change in water levels.
You will be amazed with how Welland canal contributes to the south and central Canada economy via st Lawrence seaway. There is lifting technology being used to bring the huge container ship down and up of 350 ft elevation between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Quite Impressive. Lock or Gate number starting from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie from 1 to 8 respectively.
Got to see a cruise ship pass through. Nice elevated observation spot to see the ships. Beautiful flower garden.
We were going to to pick my sister-in-law, who lives in Welland, out for lunch and a drive along the locks on Labour Day. Fantastic, sunny day! It just so happened that two, huge ships were passing through lock eight. Amazing to watch how the water seems to lift a ship so effortlessly. When our kids were still little, we used to pack a picnic, and sit and watch the tankers go by. After all these years, I’m still in awe of what it took to build these locks! If you have never been, pack a picnic, pack up your kiddies, and go for a drive. Make sure you look on the app that shows what ships are going through the canal and their times. That way, you won’t miss a thing!
