Where do I begin... Office staff "Shirley" rude, unprofessional, insensitive!!! SITUATION: Drove 3 hours on yesterday to visit my Mother's graveside and place flowers in her honor, imagine my honor when I discovered that her headstone was removed--- Gone---Space empty!!! I cried until I puked, had a panic attack because I simply didn't understand. On today I reached out to the business office who 1st accused me of not knowing my Mother's location and then said, "well if it's missing, we didn't do it." When I asked to speak with management I was NOT transferred to a voicemail, nor provided with an email. But just know this ISN'T over!!! MY MOTHERS HEADSTONE IS MISSING!!! My family and I are retaining an attorney. I feel like families need to unite, a google review is NOT enough to make a difference in the place where our loved ones are layed to rest...
I'm absolutely terrified that this cemetery is back open and burying any human being. I might trust them to bury a dog or a cat, but never again a human being that once walked the earth. My grandmother and grandfather were buried here along withe numerous family members. This was a trusted black burying site for so many years in Chicago. When the news broke of their deceitful behavior, it was so hurtful. The families that were affected were compensated with a $100 check or sometimes less. This is sickening. What kinda people are these? And on top of all this..they found Emett Tills original casket thrown out in a shed on the property from 1955. The law said it was supposed to be properly fixed and they never did it. The only reason its displayed in the Smithsonian is because it was found among the burial tragedies. This has been going on for years. This is unacceptable and its ran by black people. Do better! Your souls are going to hell!
Thanks for showing you care about people’s loved ones, not one accommodation to try to get an earlier appointment because we have to go out of town to get other family members, for our loved one final arrangements !! Ugh pure ignorance and disgust. You two women should not be the face of this business
Was terrified to visit based on all the reviews. My rating is based on the history of the cemetery. Is horrible the past that we have had to deal with and the situations that we have to deal with as a people. But the staff was friendly with getting me a map quickly. But there are all things that we need to deal with as far as the pain and the loss. Its more of a community effort that needs to take place and we all need to work together. We can get there and keep providing all the feedback to them. Keep communication effective and again, GOD's will, we can make everything right. But I was able to have a moment with my Great Grandmother, I found it after some wandering, unfortunately there was no help, but that allowed me time to really be in the head space and determined to see her. There was nothing that made me upset about the grave site. The grass was a little grown over and the was a moat to step over, and it was not clearly marked. There is always room for improvement.
I give this place a 5 due to the fact that this is where Emmett Till is resting. I’m not sure if anyone will read this. I wanted to visit tomorrow. 2-25-23. But have no idea as to where Emmett Till is buried. If anyone knows, please help out.
I wish i could give this place zero stars. For years my family has been laid to rest at Burr oak Cemetery but when i recently went there to visit my loved ones the Cemetery it self looks like it need to be buried. I told my daughter what ever you decide to do with my body please don't put me there. The up keep of this place is sad and the office staff are very rude.
You better get it together!!! You put another man’s headstone on my grandma and discarded her flowers… when it was caught you put his headstone on top of someone else!!!! Her family will be there soon!!!!!
Massive sink holes throughout. Went to pay respect to my loved one. I was horrified attempting to drive around the cemetery because of the massive sink holes. I was extremely careful leaving because the potential damage to my car could have been costly. If Burr Oaks can't afford to have the grounds paved, they could have gravel poured.
Never had a problem with the staff but the limited hours you can visit bothers me. They should have longer summer hours. I live out of town and can never visit on special days. 4 is too early to close a cemetery I can see 6 or 7 o'clock. Now they start closing even earlier. I will never bury another family member in a gated cemetery. It doesn’t help people who live out of town at all but I guess it’s perfect for the staff.
Burr Oak cemetery has continuously been rude to my family and I for years. I drove out of state, 3 hours away, to visit my deceased family members during Mother’s Day weekend, and because of COVID, they refused to give me the information over the phone to help me locate one of my family members. I left Chicago unable to visit one of the plots where my relative was buried at, I walked around for hours in the freezing cold looking for his headstone, and left because I couldn’t find him. Very disappointed that they have staff onsite who felt no remorse and had no cares. Very lazy staff!!!! Do not bury your loved ones here!!!
