Brunet Island State Park

Story

Brunet Island State Park is a state park of Wisconsin, USA, featuring a 169acre island in the Chippewa River. The remainder of the park's 1225acre are on the east bank of the river. It is noted for its numerous white-tailed deer and large eastern hemlock trees. The park is located just north of Cornell in Chippewa County in the Northern Highland region of Wisconsin. The Old Abe State Trail begins in the park and follows the riverbank south to the town of Chippewa Falls, with access to Lake Wissota State Park.Natural historyBrunet Island is formed by the confluence of the Chippewa and Fisher Rivers. Backwater channels at the north end of the island create several undeveloped islets. The regional landscape was strongly marked by glaciation during the Wisconsin glaciation. The park is forested with mature eastern hemlocks. Deer, overpopulated on the island, eat most of the young hemlocks. In time red pines and spruces may become dominant. Small fenced plots are scattered throughout the island to protect saplings and undergrowth from the deer. In 1977, a tornado touched down on the north-central part of the island, leveling 18acre. The tornado left so much debris that the park was closed until spring 1978 for cleanup. Today, this area is regenerating with birch trees.

Awesome State park with many campsites on the water. Lots of room to play, relax, hike, kayak, boat, and fish!! Electrical sites are not waterfront. But, they are very spacious and a close walk to the river. Kayak and canoe rentals are available.
Spent a few days here in the non-electric north campground. Really nice to be so close to the water, and did a lot of kayaking around the little islands of the park and on the Chippewa River. There’s also a beach, electric sites, picnic and lodge area, hiking trails, etc. it’s really close to town so it’s possible to walk over and grab an ice cream or go to the brewery. Sites are really close together so there’s not much privacy but people keep to themselves mostly. Overall had a good time and feeling good to be sore from lots of paddling in the sun.
My wife and I take much pride traveling the state of Wisconsin camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, bird watching...you name it. We have been to MANY places in every corner of the state and have to say this place is a gem. If you like camping with Nature close by this place is a must we had owls, fox, and deer 30 yards from our site. Mushrooms growing everywhere and a number of edibles. The view was unreal with sunsets and ducks and herons in every nook. Kayacking was superb being able to tuck away all over. Even caught walleye, large and small mouth bass, perch, and northern. Bird watching here was quite amazing with all the different habitats letting us see anything from pleated and osprey to warblers and titmouse. Last but not least the camp host here are the nicest I've ever met ,wish they were my neighbors here at home. Restrooms: Very clean everyday Dog-friendliness: This place definitely is as long as people keeps repeating not everyone love dogs. We camped all week with are qnd walked trail also let him swim by the moorings. Picnic area: Beautiful spot all spread out with a number of red headed woodpeckers.
Wonderful state park/campground! Very clean and well maintained park. No too big but has so much to do, bike the Old Abe Trail, canoe, kayak, or hike. Campsites are large with filtered light and spaced apart nicely! One of my favorite state parks. Playground: Very nice play ground on the south end of the park, with bathrooms flush access to a pavilion and the beach. Restrooms: Clean and well stocked with TP and hand sanitizer. Dog-friendliness: Dogs allowed. There's even a dog park area between the 2 campgrounds. Picnic area: Several picnic areas with plenty of picnic tables, mowed lawn and grills.
This place was absolutely magical! We camped overnight the first weekend in October and the fall colors were amazing! Camping sites are spacious and the buildings are all kept in great condition. Highly recommend this State Park whether you are Camping or want to hike some awesome trails. They also double as Nordic Ski trails during the winter that seem like they would be nice if you are in to that as well.
A very beautiful state park with plenty of hiking trails, camping spots, beach, boat landing and ball fields. Personally I think this is a kayaker's dream spot as there are fantastic places to kayak all around the island including some smaller 'hidden' channels. Brunet Island State Park may be a bit out of the way and off the beaten path, but it's well worth the trip.
lovely little campground with many waterfront sites. site 42 looks to be one of the best. The old abe bike trail to Chippewa Falls is a terrific outing.
Another beautiful WI state park. Excellent hiking trails & especially loved the on-road bike trail in the park that connected to the Old Abe state trail. We stayed for 4 days, camping in the south campground. Well maintained. Good showers-appreciated the showers with continuous water flow that didn't stop after 10 seconds. Brought my state park t-shirt to continue to support these wonderful places.
We loved it here. It’s definitely like island life. The weather was a little bipolar but we made the best of it. Awesome place to kayak and everyone was so friendly. Heads up the office is usually closed because of covid so we had to venture in to town to grab wood. There’s a guy on south street in Cornell that has a trailer with firewood for sale. If you like checking out mushrooms this place is a dream. Highly recommend. Can’t wait to go back when the leaves are changing.
On the island the hiking trails trails are pretty easy but off the island the Nordic trail is a lot longer and more challenging. The drinking water is clean and the bathrooms are pretty well maintained considering the amount of traffic they get
